After all the wear and tear of this past year, A.W.A.R.E. has emerged victorious. What wear and tear you ask? Well, for starters there was the death of the A.W.A.R.E. luncheon keynote speaker Larry Hagman and the change of the Alzheimer’s Association Great Dallas Chapter leadership.
But seamlessly, A.W.A.R.E. President Kay Hammond braved through the ups and downs and pulled her troops together to raise funds to fight the disease.
After recovering from the loss of her friend Larry Hagman, she and Luncheon Chair Laurie Kidder managed to arrange to have Linda Gray (Larry’s TV wife) to sub in for him “in remembrance of him and a tribute to his wife, Maj,” who is a victim of Alzheimer’s.
The results were an outstanding luncheon, a loving tribute and $300,000 raised.
Then “An Artist Against Alzheimer’s” brought in an additional $38,500 to be used in a “new art-related program for Alzheimer’s patients called ‘Memories in the Making.’”
An additional $10,000 was given for the sponsorship of “Hope for Tomorrow,” a multi-ethnic symposium planned for May 2014.
End results: $348,500 was raised in the past year by A.W.A.R.E. to help those affected by Alzheimer’s.
Kay, you can take the 4th off and relax.
