In honor of last Thursday’s World Down Syndrome Day, Best Buddies of North Texas has officially launched its 2024 fundraiser, Best Buddies Annual Champion Of The Year Gala.
Taking place on Friday, November 22, (aka the Friday before Thanksgiving), this year’s dinner will take place at On The Levee in the Design District with the theme “Studio 89,” in honor of Best Buddies International’s being founded in 1989 by Anthony K. Shriver.
Co-Chairing the event are Christie and Elbert Choi, who last year co-chaired the SPCA of Texas’ Fur Ball.

According to the couple, whose household includes two sons and three dogs, “We absolutely love the mission that Best Buddies has set out to accomplish. They are fully dedicated to creating opportunities socially and in the workplace to form a fully inclusive world for those with IDD [Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities].”
The evening will honor a select group of individuals, professionals, and community leaders known as Champions, who “commit to raising funds and awareness for Best Buddies throughout their campaign. The Champions advocate for the Best Buddies mission and generate countless opportunities for friendship, jobs and leadership development.”
In addition to honoring the Champions’ collective impact, the highlight of the evening will be the naming of the Grand Champion of the Year.
Another highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Visionary Award to recently retired Moody Foundation Grant Director Allan Matthews for his 32 years of service.
Best Buddies International is “dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendship, integrated employment, leadership development and inclusive living for people with intellectual and development disability.
Alas, Best Buddies North Texas has been so busy that it hasn’t had time to create a page for sign-ups, so you’ll need to contact Best Buddies North Texas Development Director Tracy Churchman at 916.295.9111.
