2023 North Texas Giving Day Booster: Bright Lights Theatre

Sep 12, 2023 1:30 PM by Jeanne Prejean

According to Bright Lights Theatre’s supporter Daniel Carr and supporter/director McKenna Carr,

“In a world yearning for happiness, Bright Lights Theatre (BLT) is bringing joy to DFW through the power of storytelling. Bright Lights’ mission is to train the next generation as masterful storytellers who share the light of Christ. Students who participate in Bright Lights learn to understand that every story points to a greater true story – the story of God’s rescue plan for us through His Son, Jesus.

“For example, in Frozen, Anna displays an act of true love, sacrificing her own life to save her sister, Elsa, despite being previously rejected, similar to how Christ gave His life for us in the ultimate act of true love. In Annie, we see the heart of a father who is moved to adopt an orphan and bring her into a new life, just as God (the Father) adopts those who place their faith in Jesus into His family and gives us new life.

“In partnering with BLT, we’ve had the opportunity to champion families in mentoring their children to develop character traits that reflect Christ and challenge them to grow in their personal lives, faith, and passion for theatre.

“While BLT has had the opportunity to create a new standard of excellence in theatrical training in the DFW area, the organization is growing exponentially, creating greater demands for outside support. A growing community also calls for a permanent home. To date, BLT has been partnering with local schools and churches to find temporary spaces to host its various programs and productions. An independent location provided by generous donations would serve our families and students by enabling BLT staff to focus primarily on teaching theatrical excellence, eliminating the recurring distraction of identifying and negotiating for a safe location to provide training and host productions.

“With your contributions, Bright Lights can expand its offerings to support even more North Texas families. We are committed to providing a community where children can have fun while being accepted, cared for, encouraged, and trained toward mastery in the theatre arts.

“We have witnessed the impact our donors have on our students. Several of many key impact moments include:

  • A teen’s face lighting up because she received a scholarship to participate in the next production.
  • Children gleefully encouraging and imitating one another’s achievements onstage.
  • Parents delighting in seeing their child try and succeed at something new.
  • Casts joyfully jumping up and down in celebration of their teamwork and the accomplishment of an excellent performance.

“On behalf of BLT and the North Texas families you will impact, we want to say thank you! We couldn’t do this without the help of our donors, and we can’t wait for you to join us in witnessing the joy that your contributions and support of Bright Lights Theatre will enable North Texas to experience.”

In 14 years, Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day has pumped more than $503 million into the North Texas community. In 2022, more than $62.6 million was raised through 94,385 donors benefiting over 3,210 area nonprofits.
