The word “gusty” understated the conditions that faced the 2018 Mad Hatter’s Tea guests on Thursday, April 12. Even as they departed their vehicles, some ladies found their magnificent chapeaus were literally gone with the wind thanks to 30 MPH breezes. Pity those who thought bigger taller was better.
With hands raised to hold down their hats, guests made their way into the calm of the Ginsburg Plaza, as the surrounding trees swayed like high school cheerleaders’ pompoms. Inside the plaza, the windless conditions allowed hands to be lowered for flutes of champagne and to hold entry number cards as they walked the carpet for the hat competition.
Event Chair Venise Stuart had hoped that her theme “A Garden By The Sea” would inspire creations boding the elegance and grandeur of Newport. However, some ladies looked like they were more seaworthy with headdresses bigger than the Queen Mary II and nautical toppers. One even wore a mini-aquarium.
