Wednesday, March 28: This time of year it seems like everyone is on a diet. After all, weren’t the holidays an overdose of sweets, feasts and drinks? But all this concern over weight loss is also a reminder that there are people, both men and women, who are obsessed with losing weight . . . at any cost. Including everything from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, eating disorders are too often written off as a nudge-nudge-get-over-it problem or a rich girls’ issue.
According to The Elisa Project Executive Director Sharon Seagraves, “These disorders are complex mental illnesses that have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness — up to 20%. They don’t discriminate, but affect both males and females of all ages, races, ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds. When we consider the devastating physical and psychological impact of eating disorders, it’s vital that we continue to expand our prevention and intervention efforts and to improve access to treatment.”
To provide school-age and community education and prevention programs through North Texas, The Elisa Project will hold its seventh annual Life Lessons Lunch at the Hilton Anatole.
Luncheon Chairs Robin Bagwell and Jan Osborn have arranged for Brad Lamm to be the keynote speaker. In addition to being an educator, author and frequent expert on the Dr. OZ Show, Brad has personally battled eating binges and bulimia.
