While Jersey Mike’s Subs may sound like an east coast meal, it ended up being a North Texas blow-out that led to a national fundraising program. Yes, Jersey Mike’s CEO Peter Cancro may have served up his first sub in 1971 at the age of 14, but he eventually became boss and discovered that he could serve more than meals.
Thanks to Jersey Mike’s North Texas Area Director Dalton Stewart getting together with Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer Foundation Forum Member Mary Dowling back when the first area store was being constructed, a fundraiser was born. Mary asked Dalton about donating a portion of each sub sold to WOKC. He took her card and, once the store opened, he called her back and made it happen.
It was so successful that Jersey Mike’s “adopted the initiative as the company’s DFW fundraiser in 2011.”
Since then, “Jersey Mike’s owners and operators throughout the country have raised $88M for more than 200 different charities including hospital, youth organizations, food banks and more.”
In addition to having people donate during the “Month Of Giving” in March, the Day Of Giving will take place on Wednesday, March 27, when 100% of the day’s sales will benefit WOKC in DFW.
Since 2011, WOKC has received $2.5M thanks to Jersey Mike’s fundraising.
According to WOKC Founder Cindy Brinker Simmons, “We are profoundly grateful to Jersey Mike’s, their DFW franchisees and their customers for their kind generosity, treasured partnership and continued support toward our mission of eradicating pediatric cancer and providing hope for our young children battling this disease. Jersey Mike’s has created an astounding culture of giving that has deeply touched the heroic families we serve.”
So, why not order subs for the entire staff for luncheon on March 27? You can even have them delivered.
