According to Mary Crowley Cancer Research supporter Kimberly Hinshaw,
“It is hard to believe that a routine dermatology appointment turned my world upside down. I had a minor procedure, removing a pea-sized bump on my skin. After testing, my dermatologist informed me with tears in his eyes that I had metastatic or Stage IV melanoma, which had spread distantly throughout my body.
“It’s hard to put into words the impact this diagnosis had on me. I was diligent, meeting with three different pathologists to review the findings and interviewing several top oncologists in the Dallas area.
“I was scared and mad with no hope. Doctors told me nothing could be done to treat my late-stage diagnosis and I should get my affairs in order because I had about six months. I was interested in living, not dying.
“Luckily, an oncologist friend informed us about clinical trial possibilities at Mary Crowley Cancer Research. They got me in immediately for a consultation where I qualified for a trial. This was the first time I had experienced hope since my diagnosis.
“I was happy to hear from my doctor that this concept of immunotherapy was one of the latest advancements in cancer. The clinical trial process was an emotional roller coaster, but I was willing to try anything to survive.
“The staff at Mary Crowley fought alongside me side-by-side throughout my cancer battle with compassion, strength, humor, and kindness. I am truly grateful for my oncology team, my soldiers, my warriors, my nurses, and my doctors.
“Thank you is not enough, for my hope does live at Mary Crowley! I am alive today because of them. Today, I am a survivor trying to give back and pay it forward.
“During this giving season, I wanted to encourage you to contribute to Mary Crowley Cancer Research’s Benevolence Fund, which helps patients with lodging, food, transportation and other costs that may incur while receiving treatment. While I was local, many patients have to travel from out of town and need lodging conveniently near their treatment at Medical City. The Benevolence Fund helps patients cover some, if not all of these costs, making their time at Mary Crowley clinic a more pleasant and restful experience.”
