Throughout North Texas kitchens are buzzing with activity in preparation for Thursday’s Thanksgiving. Whether you’re cooking for a herd of family and friends or just a couple of pals, there may be one or two guests that will have very restrictive diets.
Whoa! No, not that fussy aunt or that guest who’s on the Ozempic diet program. It’s the critters in your household.
With all the aromas filling the place, the noses of dogs and cats are going to be overwhelmed with lick-chopping ideas. You just might be able to share some items, but there are others that are dangerous for furry friends.
So, what’s a no-no unless you want to spend Thursday night at the animal ER?
- Turkey skin, bones, gravy and/or stuffing
- Ham
- Foods containing spices
- Chocolate, cookies, pies, candy and gum
- Mashed potatoes
- Creamed peas
- Butter, sour cream, salt or pepper
- Sweet potatoes with added ingredients
- Pumpkin pie
- Alcohol
- Grapes or raisins
- Onions, scallions and garlic
Great! Now, you’re wondering if there is anything that you can share. Here are some safe items:
- Turkey without the bones, the skin or fat
- Plain potatoes or sweet potatoes
- Apples (no core/seeds)
- Plain pumpkin
- Plain pears
- Green beans
- Celery
- Carrots
- Bread
- A little cheese
- Rice
- Corn (no cob)
Also, share this information with your guests because you just know they could be tempted to share with the four-legged beggars.
FYI: Play it safe. Check ahead for the location of your nearest animal emergency clinic, just in case it’s needed. They’ll be open for business throughout the day and night.
