According to YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas’ Board Chair and Chief Volunteer Officer Felix J. Lozano III,
“A brand new Park South Family YMCA is coming to South Dallas. For more than 55 years, the branch has served and operated out of the historic Queen City district. This is the YMCA’s third facility in the past 12 months that will begin major construction as part of its multi-year growth strategy.
“The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas serves more than 200,000 people annually, regardless of age, income, or background. Anchored in 19 North Texas communities, the Dallas Y has long-standing relationships and physical presence that delivers lasting personal and social change, with three areas of focus: Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
“As needs continue to evolve, the YMCA Board of Directors implemented a strategic multi-year plan for growth and expansion that would allow the organization to broaden its impact, deepen its connection among existing communities, and generate equitable opportunities across North Texas, including South Dallas.
“Park South is the flagship location where most of the Y’s food distribution takes place. As a volunteer at this location, I’ve seen firsthand the impact it has on our neighbors. In the last three years alone, we’ve been able to donate more than 142,000 meals and deliver over 340 tons of produce to families who needed it most. Park South is also where YMCA’s Southeast Sharks competitive swim team practices, the pool is one of the few indoor pools in South Dallas. In addition, the branch provides early childhood education where 97% of families are using an enrollment discount and 61% are on financial assistance.
“Our members and communities deeply rely on us, that’s why it’s paramount that we build a better Y to better serve our South Dallas residents.
“Giving back and providing a safe, supportive environment for every stage of life is part of what makes the Y unique. The new Park South is slated to have a dedicated wing for our preschool with its own entry, special spaces for our seniors and community to gather for events and classes, a new pool for our swim team and aqua classes, as well as a modernized fitness center space and lobby. But we can’t do this alone.
“With the help of the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation challenge grant and our fellow North Texans, we hope you will join us in supporting a brand new Park South Family YMCA that will create a bright future for generations. Gifts made now through October 1, 2023 , will be matched by the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation. Donations can be made online here.
“The last day Park South Family YMCA will operate is Friday, September 8, 2023. Members are invited to celebrate with a prayer breakfast starting at 7:30 a.m. After this date, the facility will be closed for construction. During this time, members will be able to access the Y’s other facilities nearby which include the Moorland Family YMCA at Oak Cliff and White Rock YMCA, or any Y of their choosing.”
