Dallas has become the come-to-magnet for corporations and education institutions. For instance, Abilene Christian University opened up a satellite location in downtown Dallas on Thursday, November 14. Here’s a report from the field:
“Last Thursday night’s Grand Opening of ACU’s satellite location in downtown Dallas looked more like a Hollywood premier. Dallas non-profit CitySquare’s mixed use building at 511 Akard that is home to offices, low income and high-end residential, even a 7-Eleven and now ACU at CitySquare was awash in purple, the school color.
“The partnership between CitySquare and Abilene Christian University has resulted in a new program that will give students practical social work experience, while strengthening the fight against poverty in Dallas. ACU students in the university’s Justice and Urban Studies Team will live in Dallas for a year and use the new center as headquarters for field research on issues related to Dallas’ poor and under-served. At the end of the program, students will offer their findings to CitySquare to help in its mission of fighting the root causes of poverty. The one-year study program will be permanently based at CitySquare.
“According to a recent New York Times article, ACU’s endowment performance is outpacing its billion-dollar-plus peers such as Yale. Loyal donors and alumni joined the large group that attended Thursday night’s opening downtown.”
