While some folks are going to be working on their flawless tans or enjoying the cool breezes of higher altitudes this summer, there are some dedicated and tireless young gals who will be sweating and bruising it up. Yup, you guessed it — the Blondes vs. Brunettes Dallas.
This will be their sixth season to powder puff football for Alzheimer’s fundraising, and it’s going to be a real challenge. Why? Because last year’s take of $340,000 raised the standard for this year’s goal to $350,000.
According to 2013 BvB Chair/veteran player Greer Fulton, “I am beyond thrilled to make the transition from playing in the game to leading the organization. Our goal for BvB Dallas is to continue the legacy of success that the founding members put in place by focusing on the cause.”
Founded by sisters whose father was afflicted by Alzheimer’s, BvB funds go directly to families and patients living with Alzheimer’s disease and research to find a cure.
The official kick-off starts this Friday at KuDeTa with both teams, coaches and some new additions like
- Team Purple — volunteers who help organize events plus Game Day and are responsible for raising $750 each
- Alumni Team — former players who “no longer plan to lace up, but want to support the cause.”
Greer reports that there will some brand-new faces on and off the field, “With over 100 new participants this year, it has been amazing to see the growth of our organization and its outreach since 2008.”
In addition to raising money to fight Alzheimer’s, the group enjoys the get-togethers that take place throughout the season. Like Wednesday night, they had the “Drink for a Cause” at Kung Fu Saloon, where 15% of all drink sales from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. went to the BvB.
By the way, each of the BvB teammates and coaches is required to raise $1,000 to be on the field for the Saturday, August 17, game at Roffino Stadium in East Dallas.
Don’t mean to brag, but among the 35 BvB games played throughout the country, the BvB Dallas “is by far the largest by number of participants, and most successful by dollars raised.” Last year BvB Dallas broke the $1M mark.
