The Friends of the Katy Trail faced quite a challenge to achieve a goal of $2M in order to “receive a Bond matching gift of $1M from the City of Dallas.”
Thanks to early donors, though, the dollars have been pouring in and now total $1.5M. Included in that amount have been a new lead gift of $250K from the Pittsburgh-based Richard King Mellon Foundation that “supports visionaries who protect, restore, and activate America’s environmental heritage and sustainable economic development.”
The 2024 Bond package includes “the two improvements most requested by Trail users.” Those projects are the following:
- a new entrance to the Trail from Fairmount Street and
- landscape restoration and safety measures on the North end of the Trail from Knox to Harvard.

The timeline for The Katy Trail‘s Bond are as follows:
- 2024 and 2025 — fundraising
- 2025 and 2026 — design work and completion
- 2027 — construction gets underway
For the full design work to commence this fall, $500K more must be raised.
