With spring showers showing no slowdown in threatening weather, as Memorial Day proved, one group that’s ready to power up is Dallas Hope Center.
Thanks to a $121,000 grant for Dallas Hope Charities from Green Mountain Energy Sun Club, Dallas Hope Center, the only LGBTQIA+-focused transitional living facility in Dallas County, now has solar power, battery storage and an electric vehicle.

In addition to supporting those down times, the grant will also “reduce costs and environmental impact while supporting LGBTQIA+ youth on their path to independence.”
In savings, the “solar installation will save DHC $4,500 in annual energy savings and $9,000 thanks to the electric vehicle.
If Hope Center is new to you, it’s been in operation since 2016, partnering through the Collective Hope Coalition to address factors that contribute to LGBTQIA+ homeless and mental health crises directly related to high rates of suicide.

According to Dallas Hope Charities, statistics “show that LGBTQIA+ young adults between the ages of 18 to 24 have disproportionately high rates of suicide.”
DHC “welcomes up to eight young adults at a time for up to one year to obtain the skills needed to live self-sufficiently.”
