According to PrideRock Wildlife Refuge Marketing Director Kayla McCain,
“It’s no secret that humans are fascinated by lions, tigers and other big cats. These majestic creatures captivate our imaginations, but it’s important to remember that wild animals are not meant to be pets, especially when big cats in the US face substantial challenges. Today, the estimated big cat population in captivity is up to 10,000 animals, with around 7,000 of those being tigers. This means there are more tigers in captivity in the U.S. than in the wild. Even more alarming, only about 6% of these big cats are housed in reputable facilities like accredited zoos or sanctuaries. This situation underscores the critical role of refuges like PrideRock Wildlife Refuge in providing protection and support during this crisis.
“Located in Terrell, PrideRock Wildlife Refuge has served as a permanent sanctuary for mistreated and unwanted animals for 32 years. Over this time, we have rescued more than 70 animals from across the country ranging from California to West Virginia. Our mission is to offer these animals—a diverse group including big and small cats, bears, and wolf dogs—not only a safe haven but a second chance at a life filled with dignity and respect. However, this mission is only possible with the support of our community.
“Each year, we eagerly participate in Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day, a pivotal event that mobilizes the community to support local nonprofits through generous giving. For PrideRock, this day is more than just a fundraiser; it represents a celebration of compassion and community spirit that is crucial to our ongoing efforts. Unlike other local wildlife rescues, PrideRock is closed to the public to ensure that our animals can truly live the remainder of their days in peace.
“That said, we rely heavily on our community to help us continue our labor of love whether that is through volunteer opportunities or financial support. North Texas Giving Day is our largest annual fundraising event, and the contributions we receive have had a profound impact on our operations at the refuge.
“Over the past six years, we have raised more than $106,000 through this giving event. These funds have allowed us to purchase essential equipment, such as a skid steer tractor, which is vital for transporting large deliveries and maintaining our pathways and driveways. The donations also support the daily needs of our animals, including their food and veterinary care.
“One of the most significant impacts we experienced from North Texas Giving Day donations was the ability to build new animal enclosures. For instance, in 2022, thanks to the $42,000 raised, we were able to build a new enclosure for Waylon, a Bengal tiger who came to us from South Texas after his owner could no longer care for him. This new enclosure ensured that Waylon had a safe and comfortable home, reflecting the direct and meaningful impact of our community’s generosity.
“Looking ahead, our goal for this year’s North Texas Giving Day is to raise $40,000. This year, we plan to focus on renovating six existing vacant enclosures and transforming them into three large, updated enclosures for big cats waiting to be rescued. This renovation will cost us upward of $130,000, but any amount we receive from donors will enable us to better accommodate incoming animals and provide them with the space they need to thrive.
“Our community’s support helps us continue our mission, build necessary infrastructure, and prepare for future rescues. Together, we can ensure that more animals receive the care and respect they deserve.”
