According to Donkey and Equine Haven volunteer Rebecca Tudor,

“Donkeys are intelligent, curious, and deeply emotional animals, and each one has a story to tell.

“The mission of Donkey and Equine Haven is to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome every equine that comes to us.  Most of the donkeys and other equines who find themselves in the care of the volunteers at Donkey and Equine Haven have been abandoned to the slaughter pipeline.  Many of these noble creatures have endured years of neglect. They arrive at the Haven exhausted and afraid, suffering from lameness, nutritional deprivation, and often in need of lifesaving healthcare intervention. The goal for each of our residents is placement with a loving forever home, and we are constantly striving to maintain a safe place for their recovery and healing, both physical and emotional.

“The support of Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day has been an absolute game changer.  It has provided a platform and visibility we’ve never had. We’re a small organization in Celina, Texas, completely reliant on volunteers and donations. 2023 was our first time participating in North Texas Giving Day and we raised almost $11,000 to provide extraordinary medical care for gravely ill residents.

“The exposure we’ve received since our first North Texas Giving Day is priceless. We’ve felt the ripple effect throughout the year. People who didn’t know we existed before North Texas Giving Day have contacted us to adopt and foster, to volunteer their time, and contribute financially.

“It’s taken us to the next level as an organization. Communities Foundation of Texas supported us at every turn, sharing knowledge and fundraising expertise, and teaching us how to increase donations. The money raised last year helped cover medical costs, which resulted in more healthy donkeys and more adoptions, giving us the capacity to save more lives. It’s been a huge win.

“The donations received through North Texas Giving Day also support The Haven’s education programming. We partner with individuals and organizations across North Texas to teach empathy and compassion, to provide healing, therapeutic support to those in need, and to raise awareness about the value of donkeys and other equines.

“North Texas Giving Day has helped the Haven elevate its mission of rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming our donkeys and other equines. There is no more noble or storied creature than the donkey, and the impact North Texas Giving Day has had on saving these precious lives cannot be understated.”
