According to KidLinks‘ music therapist Sara Chigani, MA, MT-BC,
“The majority of the clients I see have a diagnosis of Autism, so a lot of what I do is working with kids from a behavioral perspective. However, I began seeing a child who struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. It can be alarming to hear a young child express thoughts and feelings like that. During our first session, the client expressed wanting to die. In that first session, I was able to discuss those feelings further through analyzing the lyrics of one of the child’s favorite songs.
“After our first session was over, I spoke briefly with the child’s caregiver, who told me that the child had never shared those feelings so openly to anyone before, not even other family members. Even from the very first session, the caregiver was so amazed at how music therapy could assist their child in expressing such overwhelming and complex feelings that would otherwise get bottled up. It’s just another reminder how music therapy is such a powerful tool, especially for those who are experiencing such complex and challenging emotions.
