According to AWARE President Karen Koop,
“In 1989, six philanthropic women, along with 45 charter members, founded AWARE to fight the effects of Alzheimer’s in Dallas. Thirty-five years later, members and donors have raised more than $15 million to fund Alzheimer’s research, caregiver support, education programs and quality of life initiatives right here in our community.
“AWARE’s compassionate message is found in its name. To be ‘aware’ means ‘to know or be conscious of.’ We value and strive to support each person with Alzheimer’s, each caregiver and family member, each hospice worker and researcher. Each one is precious, valuable, and worthy of support, care and dignity. AWARE is unwavering in its dedication to carry on this important mission for years to come.

“As an all-volunteer organization, AWARE members lead the efforts to fund the very best researchers and projects that support the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of care partners and those living with dementia. All grant recipients are local and vetted through thoughtful research and thorough site visits. AWARE is led by families and caregivers of those impacted, with a strong personal connection to our mission – we are a group you can trust to understand the unique challenges of the disease and we share our experiences and resources with members and donors.

“AWARE’s Annual Membership Drive launches on Thursday, August 15, for the 2024-2025 Anniversary Year. Members enjoy fun, camaraderie, purpose, expert speakers, and a spring fundraising event, the AWARE Affair. The first of four membership luncheon meetings will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Arlington Hall. The speaker is Namirah Jamshed, MD, Director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
