According to Cumberland Youth And Family Services Director of Development Jennifer Jenkinson,
“For 120 years, Cumberland Youth And Family Services has been creating safe places to call home. Each day, more than 60 residents wake up across our campus, where they are provided safety, stability, hope, and healing. Last year, we provided 15,402 days of care to youth in foster care, young adults who have aged out of foster care, and resilient single-parent families.
“What does a day of care look like at Cumberland?
“A day at Cumberland brings safety from abuse and neglect to youth in foster care. It means that their needs are met while attending school, participating in extracurricular and social activities, and celebrating milestones that all kids deserve to experience.
“For young adults who have aged out of foster care, a day at Cumberland provides them with the independence that all young adults need with a safety net of support that all young adults deserve. Educational support, career guidance, and life skills come through case management and even in the form of a volunteer-led cooking class or impromptu lesson on car maintenance.
“For single-parent families, a day of care at Cumberland may include a parenting class, financial coaching, or career aptitude testing. Most importantly, they find a community of support through case managers, volunteers and other single parents living on our campus.
“And beyond our campus, Cumberland serves community members every day. Our Community Counseling program provides low-cost sessions to uninsured and underfunded Denton County residents. In addition, through our newest program, our Foster Care and Adoption team is recruiting, licensing, training, and supporting family-based foster homes – meeting an urgent need for foster homes in our community.
“At Cumberland, our residents and clients are empowered to heal and find hope beyond the circumstances that brought them to us. While a day may look different for each person, through compassionate, trauma-informed care, we work to equip everyone we serve with the tools and skills needed to achieve their goals and thrive, even after leaving our care.
“The support of Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day has amplified both our mission and our fundraising. We have raised over $273,000 from the last six North Texas Giving Days. In fact, those funds provided nearly 100,000 days of care to kids, young adults, and families on our campus. What a profound impact North Texas Giving Day and donors have made!
“Every day, Cumberland Youth And Family Services is a safe place to call home for kids in foster care, young adults aging out of foster care, and resilient single-parent families. Our residents and clients are our future leaders, employees, entrepreneurs, and parents. The positive outcomes experienced here have far-reaching impacts on our communities and future generations. We believe in the power of transformation through community, where we can provide hope and healing so that no one’s past experiences will define their future. What a difference we can make together!”
