This year’s Fourth Of July celebration started this past Saturday with Klyde Warren Park’s Independence Day Celebration that filled the Pavilion and Great Lawn to the hilt with red, white and blue and families.
On Independence Day eve, Addison’s Kaboom Town will carry on its tradition of family festivities from 5 to 11 p.m.
As for the big day, parades and picnics will take place centerstage in daylight hours, with even more fireworks lighting up the North Texas night skies.
While all the hoopla is marvelous for most, the summer temperatures can heat up the daytime activities to create all types of problems. From pavements blistering feet and paws to blinding sunshine working up a dangerous sweat, if you’re going to be outdoors during the day — whether it’s on the curb watching the parade go by or sitting poolside — don’t forget to wear sunscreen, sunglasses and hats.
Also, water needs to be a prerequisite for both people and pets. You seriously don’t want to end up in the ER on the 4th.
As for the nighttime flurry of sparkling lights in the sky, remember that one person’s “Wow!” can be another person’s greatest fear. The sound and sight of fireworks can trigger bad memories for those who served in combat situations. If you know someone who might suffer from PTSD, consider asking them if they would like to go to a nighttime movie or just stay in for a game of Mahjong or poker.
As always if you have a pet, don’t leave them outside on Thursday night. Experts say that more pets go missing on the 4th due to the explosive night than any other time of year. If you have a pet that doesn’t cotton to staying inside while you’re partying, check him/her into a kennel Wednesday for a little R&R. That way you can pick them up Friday morning instead of spending the day posting “Lost” signs on telephone poles and social media.
And if you’re the type that celebrates Independence Day in air-conditioned surroundings, retailers are having Fourth Of July sales and movie theaters are more than welcoming with popcorn and goodies — and you won’t need sunscreen!
