According to Caring Pathways of Carrollton President Janet Kelsay,
“For many families, Caring Pathways of Carrollton offers the only option of a quality day program for their adult family member with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“At Caring Pathways, we welcome clients often not accepted into similar programs due to their independent functioning level. As a mom to a special needs adult myself, I experienced first-hand the anxiety and frustration that came from being told my adult child did not meet the entry threshold of a program. Even so, it was important to me that my son be engaged and supported in a daily learning environment. In my search, I discovered a void and was compelled to help meet the need.
“Our community faces unique challenges. When I began Caring Pathways, my vision was to create an engaging experience for clients while facilitating a supportive community for families and caregivers. Leveraging a combined 100+ years in special education, our team has developed a comprehensive program involving ‘work job’ activities, exercise, science, cooking, arts and crafts, and music. We also teach skills to increase clients’ independent self-help.
“For parents and caregivers, building relationships with others on the same journey is necessary and encouraging. Monthly events, volunteer opportunities, and our wonderful staff have helped create a welcoming environment for connection.
“We have been open a little over three years. Last year was our biggest year participating in Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day. We raised just under $25,000 with a generous $10,000 match. Though some of our clients receive state funding, the amount is minimal and does not cover the full costs to run our program. Funds raised through North Texas Giving Day have allowed us to accept more clients, purchase additional materials and supplies, and provide safety vests and first aid kits for community outings. All clients participate in outings, regardless of their level of need.
“This year, we hope to raise even more to fund our vision to expand. The need is real, and our waitlist is growing. It will take additional space and staff to increase capacity to serve more clients and families. We have a timely opportunity to increase the square footage of our current location while searching for two new client specialists. Ideally, we will be positioned to serve 10+ new families in Q4 of this year! We believe our vision is achievable through faithful supporters, and by reaching new supporters through North Texas Giving Day with news of the great things happening here, every day!”
