According to The Family Place Children’s Program Coordinator Edith Walker,
“Families often come to The Family Place with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Because they are fleeing violent situations, they often leave everything behind. That includes essential clothes and supplies to start the new school year. We’re looking to the community for support to “Fill Their Backpacks” so we can ensure that the students we serve will have a dignified start when they head back to school.
“According to a Deloitte Back-to-School Survey, parents are expected to spend, on average, $661 per child in grades K-12 on back-to-school purchases. Last year, The Family Place served more than 1,300 children in all programs—that’s a lot of uniforms and school supplies! While families are in our care, we provide for all of their basic needs, and also provide the counseling and support they need to start new lives free from violence.

“A donation to our drive can provide the following:
- $1,200 can send 2 children back to school and provide for basic needs
- $600 can send 1 child back to school and provide for basic needs
- $300 can supply 6 backpacks and provide for basic needs
- $150 can supply 3 backpacks and provide for basic needs
- $50 can supply 1 backpack and provide for basic needs
“You can also help us provide supplies by shopping our Amazon Wish List and purchasing items that will be shipped directly to us to share with clients.”
