For folks living in Dallas, the city’s Sanitation Department is making some changes. One is just a change of date; the other one you’ll probably not be so keen on.
The change of pickup dates is to “optimize collection routes to improve efficiency of recycling and garbage collection.” The new collection schedule starts the week of Monday, December 5. While garbage and recycling will continue taking place one day a week, it will probably be a different day than you’re used to. To learn of how the new schedule effects your life … and it will … check the Sanitation Department Calendar.
Before getting to the not-so-great news, consider what life would be without the sanitation crews coming to your home and taking away your household’s rejects. Magically the “stuff” disappears from your containers and you’re rid of it.
But where does it go? To sites for recycling centers and landfills.

And then there’s that bulk and brush stuff. Each month the department sends crews out to collect brush and major items. Remember waiting for them to show up when the neighborhoods were filled with limbs and even trunks on curbsides for pickup? It may have taken some time, but they showed up.
Face it. This process is a thankless job that deals with everything from leftover food and disposable diapers to mattresses and chairs. Even the infamous pandemic didn’t deter this department from showing up.
Hopefully, you’re better prepared for this second news item from the Dallas Sanitation Department. The fee is being increased. If you’re thinking $5 or $10 more a month, you’re wrong. The sanitation fee is increasing from $34.30 (aka with tax $37.13) to $35.81 (aka with tax $38.76).
That’s less than a $2 a month increase. Why, a large Diet Coke at McDonald’s costs more.
