North Texas Giving Day Booster: A Pair Of Socks

Sep 5, 2022 9:30 AM by Jeanne Prejean

John Beatty*

According to A Pair of Socks Board Member John Beatty

“We supply socks, undergarments, and hygiene essentials to those in need. That’s it. And 100% of the monies we collect go to our clients; A Pair of Socks has zero operating expenses. So, you can be sure that your entire donation is going to those in need rather than supporting the organization. Those struggling with homelessness or joblessness have basic needs, and that is what A Pair of Socks addresses: basics.

“This 501(c)(3) started as and remains a small family charity. The board members are all related, and it began simply when our founding Board Member read an article that those experiencing homelessness need and really appreciate clean, new socks. So, socks were collected and handed out on the streets to those we came across. There were fewer than 100 bags handed out that first time.  Simple.

“And through the generosity of our supporters, we have grown. We are blessed to have become a Bombas Giving Partner and have received annual shipments of 2,500 pairs of Bombas socks to distribute to our clients. This year we expect those Bombas socks in the Fall.

“Cash donations are received from individuals and corporations which allow us to purchase undergarments and hygiene essentials to be included with the socks, and to purchase the string backpacks to enable distribution. This past year the youth ministry of St. Ann’s Church in Coppell put together 500 bags for our clients.

“A Pair of Socks has partnered with other 501(c)(3)’s to ensure that the donations reach those in need. Community Crossroads in Fort Worth received bags for distribution and bags were donated directly to Genesis Woman’s Shelter and The Magdalen House in Dallas, among others.

“Any support that we receive is appreciated!”

Communities Foundation of Texas’ North Texas Giving Day helps build awareness and support for nonprofits like nothing else. In 2021, $66 million was raised through 103,000 donors benefiting over 3,300 local nonprofits, bringing the 13-year total to over $441 million for our community. NTX Giving Day is the largest community-wide giving event in the nation.
