Anglers love to tell tales about the one that got away. But on the eve of Father’s Day, on Saturday, June 18, there were loads of catches to show-and-release in competition for trophies, thanks to the Turtle Creek Conservancy’s Kids Fishing Derby.

Before the afternoon heat set in, the youngsters, their folks and grandfolks were on the banks of Turtle Creek catching everything except a turtle or a Muscovy duck. Some of the participants were right at home with their own rods and reel, while others were newbies who were provided with equipment including bait.

On the other hand, there were a few who were just too young to cast a line, but they weren’t disappointed with a spread of sweets, snow cones, breakfast tacos provided by Lucky’s Café and a bounce house.
One fellow’s birthday was even celebrated with a donut topped with a sparkler candle.
