According to Southwest Transplant Alliance Foundation Marketing Communications and Foundation VP Kirsten Gappelberg,

“The Southwest Transplant Alliance Foundation was established to help fulfill the mission of Southwest Transplant Alliance (STA). And to put it simply, we save lives. Our Foundation supports organ donor families with programming and care as they join our community and find hope in the selfless act of organ donation. The Foundation also provides financial relief for transplant patients as they adjust to a new way of life post-transplant, and it invests in research and innovation to help advance transplant science and save more lives.
“Our ability to impact the lives of North Texans is significant. And we ask that you join us for this year’s North Texas Giving Day. Your contribution provides healing, hope and a promise for the future.

“In the midst of the COVID pandemic, STA quietly opened its doors to The Legacy Center – a state of the art facility, and the first of its kind in the area, where organ and tissue recovery take place. Our dedicated recovery center is built to the specific needs of our work, and as a result, we can recover more organs and save more lives. We can also better serve our community here with a comfortable and caring space dedicated to donor families, and a donor memorial garden that serves as a living tribute to every selfless donor and family we support. Because of the lifesaving work organ donation and transplantation provides, we like to say – Hope Starts Here.

“We’re all growing tired of talking about COVID, but that conversation is long from over. The impact of the virus on North Texas’ long-term health is still unknown. And while the pandemic impacted every corner of healthcare, at STA our mantra is – the waitlist can’t wait. Our frontline staff walked into the face of the pandemic and stood beside our hospital partners to continue this lifesaving work. And we still do so today. We test each potential donor for COVID, and in some cases, are able to transplant organs from COVID positive patients.
“In a year like no other, riddled with countless hurdles, STA’s lifesaving mission is more important than ever before. COVID has taken so much from so many people. Today and every day, we encourage our community to register to be an organ and tissue donor, tell your family about your wishes, and to always find hope. ”
