According to Cancer Strongher Founder Heidi Slansky,
“I am Heidi Slansky, founder of Cancer Strongher, a volunteer-run nonprofit started in 2018. I am also breast cancer survivor, so overseeing a nonprofit that helps keep female cancer survivors ‘fight ready’ is a cause literally near and dear to my heart.
“Cancer Strongher allows female survivors of all cancers to take the fight to cancer through free fitness boxing, tennis, Pilates, FitCamp, rowing, yoga and Taekwondo classes. We motivate survivors to get active and stay active to help rebuild and maintain their strength and sense of well being…we call it helping them ‘find their fight.’
“Research shows survivors can reduce cancer recurrence rates by living an active lifestyle. Our mission at Cancer Strongher is to make a positive impact by reducing cancer recurrence rates through exercise. All classes are free-of-charge as we never want to survivors to have to pay to participate in our programs. We are the only nonprofit in the country providing this service of partnering with a variety of local fitness facilities to bring a diverse array of workout options to our survivor community. And in the process, our local community gets involved with our survivors and our mission. We have some of the most amazing and generous fitness partners in the DFW area!
“2021 marks our third year of participating in North Texas Giving Day. NTXGD provides a platform that helps us increase our name recognition and raise a little money at the same time. We are a small nonprofit doing big things. We operate on a small and efficient budget to ensure every dollar donated to our organization is maximized to provide free active lifestyle classes for female cancer survivors. We don’t have a big marketing budget that allows us to increase awareness of our organization through traditional paid media, therefore, we rely on opportunities like NTXGD to ensure our name recognition increases year after year while we focus our efforts on making an impact in our survivor community.”
“In the past, we made sure to participate in WFAA Daybreak’s #IAMUP broadcast to increase visibility and awareness of our organization. We have had a blast at Party on the Plaza hanging out with Dirk Nowitzki, DJ LC, and the crew of WFAA News like Sonia Azad, Hannah Davis and Cleo Greene. We certainly appreciate the opportunity to network with other nonprofits during the buildup to NTXGD and to get our name out among the DFW community.
“While most of our classes are currently in the North Fort Worth area, we would like to provide services for women across the DFW Metroplex. The fight against cancer does not stop with the last drip of chemotherapy, the last zap of radiation, or the last stitch from surgery. We could use some help getting the word out about Cancer Strongher and find others who want to help survivors find their fight!”
