According to The Love Pit Innovative Programs and Advocacy Managing Director Malory Skaugen,
Since 2015, The Love Pit’s mission to #SavethePitBull has been empowered by North Texas Giving Day. In just five years, we’ve saved nearly 1,000 pit bulls, recruited hundreds of dedicated good humans, and established innovative programs that are revolutionizing rescue — thanks in large part to the NTGD platform that Communities Foundation of Texas created!
The Love Pit is proud to have developed a foster program defined by personalized support from foster coordinators, medical coordinators, and even our “Bully Good Dog” training team, whose training plans help make each adoption a success. While countless nonprofits assist homeless animals in Texas, it is our mission to save those in most dire need: the often misunderstood “Pit Bull.” As a natural next step, in 2018 we set our sights on saving Pit Bulls in the most desperate circumstances: those in need of emergency medical care, or whose senior status left them overlooked by in shelters. With the costly medical expenses associated with dogs like these, this would be no easy feat.
NTGD helped us recruit volunteers and raise the funds necessary for TLP Thrive, our innovative program for senior and emergency medical dogs. We also established Shelter Helpers, a program that supports our rescue partners via onsite volunteers in local shelters. NTGD funds also allowed us to create TLP Next Gen, our youth volunteer program. We were even able to makeover our website to attract more adopters for our dogs and those in our iRehome program. iRehome offers help to dog owners in need, including medical and behavioral resources as well as assistance with responsibly rehoming their dog.
In 2019, we opened TLP Headquarters! We set out to raise $40,000 on NTGD to create a homelike environment at our Dallas facility for temporary fosters, medical, and behavioral dogs. Not only did we meet our goal, we smashed it by raising just over $50,000 for HQ and our innovative programs. Today, TLP HQ is a home for training classes, educational events, team meetings, volunteer orientations, and more. Since NTGD 2019, we’ve housed over 25 dogs at HQ, rescued 22 dogs suffering from heart worm disease, and saved several medically critical dogs. Despite the obstacles that 2020 has presented, our organization continues to thrive thanks to the support of our donors.
On NTGD 2020, our goal is to further expand the reach of HQ and our innovative programs to support our community’s shelters, youth, pet owners, senior and medical pets, and more. With the addition of agility equipment and sun shade sail covers at HQ, we can further enrich the lives of dogs in our program, and assist adopters with expanded post-adoption training support. TLP Pack Walks will continue to support owners of leash reactive dogs in our community. We’re not just aiming to save one dog at a time, but to continue building our community of advocates working to improve life for pet owners and Pit Bulls across North Texas.
