Some rays of sunshine have arisen during these months of COVID-19. Oh, sure your closet has gone on a diet with clothes donated to nonprofits. You’ve saved a buck or two since you’re not filling up the gas tank as often. And, your pets probably think you’re staying home just because they’re so adorably cute.
But one mom, who works with a number of North Texas nonprofits, told how the pandemic provided an eye-opening experience for her son. It seems as part of his school’s community service program, the teenager would volunteer at a neighborhood food pantry. It wasn’t going to be complicated, just loading boxes of food for those in need.
That evening when he returned home he reported, “Mom, there were so many cars. They were lined up for blocks before we even opened.”
According to the mother, not only did her son help provide food for others, he discovered how many people were in need of just basic food for their families.
In the following days, he returned to the pantry as well as North Texas Food Bank to provide a helping hand.
Volunteering is a two-way street. Not only do you help an organization or person in need, but you learn about the community in which you live.
