With mornings feeling like someone left the North Texas oven on, June is feeling more like the dog days of July thanks to rising temperatures accompanied by Houston-style humidity. Weather predictors are warning of the area hitting the 100-degree mark next week!
It’s definitely time to make sure that your AC is prepared to take on the oncoming summer heat. Just like your annual physical to make sure that you’re in tiptop condition, your AC/HVAC needs some attention by professionals, too. But because of the ever-changing North Texas weather, it’s wise to do it twice a year.
If by chance your system is on the brink of retirement, be prepared to suffer sticker shock. While replacing a system can be a hefty investment initially, it will amaze you into a long-term love affair with cheaper electric bills and more efficient cooling.
And if you’re living in one of those homes that is “older than your parents,” have your duct system checked out. Over the years, some tears and holes may be costing you money and cool air.
BTW, if you do have to buy a new system, shop around. Get recommendations from people who have had a new system installed. Then get three bids and ask for any perks like extended maintenance programs.
If your wallets are a bit lean, at least check the filters and make sure shrubbery isn’t blocking the compressors.
Hint: Ceiling and floor fans can help even the most sophisticated system by circulating the air and allowing you to have your thermostat humming along at the mid- and upper-70s.
