North Texans have earned the reputation for all things good like philanthropy, helping others, kindness, etc. But even during these trying times as donors rescue so many nonprofits, they need to be wary.
For example, a well-known philanthropist reported a recent incident:
I just received an alert from American Express on my black card.
“Someone had tried to use my account number at Exxon, I used it three times on the 14th — two separate charges to [fundraising program redacted] and another to the [nonprofit redacted]. Somewhere along the line, in processing my donations someone picked up my card number. So, you might want to warn everyone to watch their accounts, while they’re trying to be supportive of the community.”
Luckily, his/her brain cells were top notch and s/he notified American Express and the organizations of the situation. It was nipped in the bud.
As the roll out of sincere requests continues to take place by dedicated nonprofits, please double check your financial institutions to make sure that your generosity doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
