According to Fresh Start Mentoring Past Director of Social Marketing Kenyon Lowe II,
2018 was another pace-setting year in donations for U.S. households. According to the Austin Metro, the Rodman Report states that 43% of all Texas businesses increased their charitable donations.
It makes sense that the Communities Foundation of Texas led the way among non-profit donations. A total of $48 million was raised in 18 hours through North Texas Giving Day. 2,700 local non-profit organizations were assisted including of Fresh Start Mentoring.
The mission of Fresh Start Mentoring is to “provide effective programs to meet the educational, social, and personal needs of families and individuals.” When people “come to Fresh Start Mentoring you are not a number,” said Dr. Harold G. Durham, director of Fresh Start Mentoring. He continues, “our goal, through our services, is to provide every individual with holistic life achievement opportunities.”
Last year donations raised through North Texas Giving Day enabled Fresh Start Mentoring to purchase computers for their GED testing center, supported education to reduce stress, abuse, and emotional crisis, and expanded counseling capabilities. Fresh Start Mentoring was able to aid 1000 people with donations received.
The Fresh Start Mentoring motto is “Be the Change you want to see.” Change is facilitated through the self-esteem enhancement garnered by the GED Testing Center, mentor programs, and lifestyle training and counseling for adults and children.
Through partnership with the Arlington, JCM Diversion program and The Arlington Municipal Court Fresh Start Mentoring provide a social-emotional model support system that compels youth to reassess the way they see themselves, which will build self-esteem, improves decision-making, and reduces at-risk behaviors. Fresh Start Mentoring offers counseling services for adults, adolescents, and families as well.
September 2019 brings a new partnership with the Arlington Library and the Workforce Connection that provides GED tutoring with Fresh Start Mentoring.
Educational services received 16 percent of the overall charitable donations in the U.S. in 2018. Dr. Durham is hopeful that the funds raised this year through North Texas Giving Day will allow Fresh Start mentoring to double the number of individuals and families aided.
On behalf of Fresh Start Mentoring Dr. Durham encourages you to give during the North Texas Giving Day event on September 19, 2019.
