According to ChristianWorks for Children Community Relations and Development Officer Wesley Encalade,
I love babies. I love how they smell and sound and feel. My wife and her friends call me the baby-whisperer because of my knack for calming fussy babies. And you can bet, when you bring your baby into my home or my church, I’m going to be nearby to offer a brief respite.
So, I was thrilled to learn that our Becoming Mom program was hosting a Diaper Day at our Fort Worth office last month. You ask, “What’s a diaper day? And who’s it for?” I am so glad you asked!
On June 15, 100 mothers stopped by our office located at 2214 Hemphill Street in Fort Worth, to pick up a free box of diapers for their baby. They also received a one-on-one consult with one of our licensed counselors (in English or Spanish) and learned of their eligibility for our Becoming Mom program. Through this program, moms and dads of babies 0-36 months receive free counseling, free classes, and free mentorship to guide them on their journey into parenthood.
For some, the journey into parenthood was unexpected. For others, they never had strong examples of how to be a mother or father in their development years. And for most, parenting is just harder than anticipated. The encouragement and listening ear of someone a little further down the road of parenting is a welcomed blessing.
The mothers who joined us last month were exceedingly appreciative! Many have already called to schedule their first session with a counselor or have signed up for one of our parenting classes. One mother was so grateful for the opportunity, that she delayed her trip to the hospital even though labor started and her new baby was on the way (don’t worry, she made it in time)!
Each of these new moms will have the opportunity now to talk to a professional counselor about her emotional, physical, and spiritual needs; to join us for a series of classes to guide her journey into parenthood, designed with practical information and encouragement to help her and her new baby meet important milestones; and learn from an experienced parent ready to walk alongside her while providing support and friendship.
To the friends and donors who provided boxes and boxes of diapers for our Diaper Day, we say “thank you!” To the staff and volunteers who showed up to help with registration, hold babies, and provide water for everyone, we could not have done this without you. And to anyone looking to make a difference in the world around you, our Becoming Mom program is just one of the many ways that ChristianWorks for Children is impacting lives in our community. We would love to share more about the ways you can join us in bringing help and hope to our neighbors!
