According to Trinity River Mission CEO Gloria Lopez,
“My holiday wish is simple: to make sure that every student who wants to come to Trinity River Mission (TRM) every day to help themselves will have the resources and opportunities they need to do so.
“Just look at 10th grader, Kamryn. Just one year ago, he found himself standing ten feet away from his uncle being shot.
“’That’s the worst experience I’ve ever had in my entire life. I went to help my uncle but got pulled back. Every day, I think I could have saved him. For so long after that, I wouldn’t talk to anyone. If I was mad, I’d isolate myself. If something made me angry, I’d snap at anyone. Sometimes, I’d run away from home just to get away.’
“That’s when Kamryn found TRM. For him, coming to TRM every day is essential.
“’My behavior has changed so much since I’ve been in TRM. They changed my whole personality. I’m learning how to be open about how I feel and what I’m going through. I get to do different activities, go to new places like New Orleans, and meet new people. If I couldn’t come here every day, I know my old ways would return to me. That’s so disappointing to think about, because I know I’ve worked hard to get where I am.’
“Kamryn has grown tremendously in his character, respect, leadership, and self-esteem. At TRM, he’s getting the academic support to get ready for college. He can interact with positive male role models who teach him what it really means to be a man. And he’s learning what it means to persevere.
“’TRM reminds me every day that there’s always going to be different obstacles that make you mad; but you have to overcome them. You have to see the positive. I don’t always succeed, but I keep trying. And I know as long as I have TRM, I’ll get there.’
“With your support this December, we can ensure TRM continues to offer the important academic, social, and emotional programs every single day for kids like Kamryn. He, and so many others like him, deserve all the support they can get to go after their dreams.
“Trinity River Mission is the largest afterschool nonprofit in West Dallas, serving over 550 students in grades K-12 each year. On average, 95% of students are promoted, 98% graduate, and 90% enroll in post-secondary education. TRM received recognition in 2018 and 2014 by the national initiative, Excelencia in Education, as “one of the most effective programs in the U.S. at increasing academic opportunities, achievement, and college success for Latino students.”
