According Family Compass CEO Ona Foster,
“For parents with young children, the holidays are often a wonderful and enjoyable time of year. However, for families living in poverty and experiencing challenges in their lives, the holidays can be stressful. At Family Compass we know that stress, poor living conditions and a lack of parenting skills can leave children at risk for abuse and neglect. The work we do throughout the year in our parent education and in-home mentoring programs to educate, support, and mentor parents strengthens their skill level and lowers stress. We double our efforts around the holidays to help them prepare for the extra layer of tension that can arise when pocket books are stretched. Additionally, through toy and diaper drives this time of year, we make sure that parents are able to give their children a bright holiday.
“A young mother at 15, Isabell talks about the impact her Family Compass Parent Educator had on her.
“’Family Compass helped me find my voice,’ she says. She mentions how, without the help, she would not have been able to even focus on her baby and on being a mother. With our help she was able to embrace being a parent and learned how to support and connect with her daughter.
“Isabell now wants other struggling parents to know about the support she got so they can get help, too.
