As beautiful as this day started, it is closing with a dark cloud hovering over the Dallas Zoo. The hunky “little” Nile hippo Adhama died suddenly last night.
It was just last year that the seven-year-old arrived at his new digs at the Simmons Hippo Outpost and to get to know shy 10-year-old Boipelo. Immediately, the 3,722-pound cutie proved himself to be a showstopper doing somersaults in the water and “smiling” for photos at the Brierley Encounter underwater viewing area.
According to reports, the Zoo staff had noticed last week that he had been lethargic and not all that hungry.
Unfortunately, this loss is not the first for the Dallas hippo community. This past February the hippo couple gave birth to a calf that did not survive.
While many had hoped that Adhama would have been a Zoo resident for many years to come, he made a lasting impression during his all too brief time in North Texas.
Our condolences to the Dallas Zoo staff, volunteers and supporters for this loss.
