I learned about North Texas Giving Day when Mommies In Need was a young organization. I was new to the non-profit world- in fact I often joke that I “accidentally” started a non-profit!
I was a stay-at-home mom to twin toddlers when I went through a series of health problems including 5 major surgeries and a cancer diagnosis. As I recovered, a friend was diagnosed with colon cancer and didn’t have help with her kids. I was better and the nanny that had helped me was looking for work. So I had someone who needed help and someone who could provide the help and just had to put them together and raise a bunch of money. So Mommies In Need was born!
Because we didn’t have a set fundraising calendar, we decided to channel our efforts into making NTXGD our biggest fundraiser of the year. On September 15, 2015, just ten months from our start, we raised over $25,000! That year, we won the Dallas Women’s Foundation prize for largest number of individual donors in our category (which we have won the last three years running- we are aiming for 4, but welcome a little friendly competition!) To put the impact of that day into perspective, at that point our yearly budget was around $80,000. So in one day we raised almost one third of our operating budget!
With this first big influx of funding, we were able to expand quickly. We send nannies into the homes of our client families to help when a stay-at-home parent is going through a health crisis. These nannies are background checked, CPR certified, and specially trained by our organization. We send the same nanny to the same family up to 40 hours a week for as long as 6 months. And we have now provided 40 Dallas families with almost 14,000 hours of free childcare!
This year we are hosting a free community event to celebrate NTXGD on September 20th from 3-6pm at Greenland Hills United Methodist Church (5835 Penrose Ave). We will have bounce houses, food trucks, face-painting, balloons, and more! We truly believe in the collaborative spirit of NTXGD, and we welcome other non-profits participating to bring your flyers and tell people about the good work you are doing to strengthen North Texas as well!
