For over 40 years, the International Rescue Committee in Dallas (IRC) is proud to have brought thousands of refugees from harm to home in North Texas.
With the promise of new beginnings, safety, and hope, refugees from over 65 nations have begun their lives again as our neighbors and friends. The North Texas community has continuously stood hand-in-hand with the IRC in Dallas supporting those uprooted by conflict.
Every year, North Texas Giving Day allows Dallas to continue to extend this same southern hospitality to the newest Texans. Through the generosity of NTxGD donors in years past, the IRC in Dallas’ was able to continue delivering long-term services such as job readiness, education, career development, and mental health to help our refugees succeed and strengthen their lives.
This year we have a new program on the horizon. With the support from North Texas Giving Day, the IRC is launching an academic coaching program for students beginning high school.
For refugee students, there are many hardships beyond the traditional woes of class ranks, SATs, and college applications. Na Khai, a recent graduate who arrived to the US as a freshman says, “Learning English and adapting to a new environment were the hardest challenges.”
The new Academic Coaching Program bridges the educational gaps that exist within our Vickery Meadow community. By providing support and education to both child and parent, the IRC will evaluate the needs of students and set short-term and long-term goals to achieve academic success.
Every refugee family who arrives in North Texas is forging a new path ahead in their American dream. By supporting the IRC in Dallas this North Texas Giving Day (September 20, 2018), you will be leading the way for the next generation of trail blazers.
