In November of 2017, I had the privilege of taking over the position of Executive Director of Blue Caboose Children’s Fund. Blue Caboose has been a nonprofit in Dallas for the past six years and this year we are excited to be participating in our first North Texas Giving Day. We have been told by so many of our nonprofit peers that this event is the event of the year!
The main mission of our organization is to help families live with Cystic Fibrosis. In addition to being the Executive Director of Blue Caboose, I am a mom to two boys who live with Cystic Fibrosis. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as their mother is that there is more to living than simply staying alive. Although my sons each spend around 3 hours per day doing breathing treatments and they have to take over 30 pills per day, we strive to make sure that we live every day and that we experience all life has to offer.
Cystic Fibrosis is a terminal, progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. Many families of children living with Cystic Fibrosis aren’t able to enjoy things that most of us take for granted. Hospitalizations, medical bills, prescriptions and therapies add up so quickly and don’t leave much wiggle room for extra expenses. Blue Caboose helps with things like back to school supplies, Christmas gifts, hospital care packages and date nights for parents. We also provide grants up to $500 for our families to apply for when they have hit hard times.
North Texas Giving Day is a fantastic platform for us to meet new donors who will be able to help us support the programs already in place and help us expand to serve more families! We recently opened a new chapter in Fort Worth, which gives us the ability to work with CF families in the entire DFW area! We are so honored to partner with North Texas Giving Day, and extremely excited by the possibilities it offers.
I can’t wait until next year when I am sitting at the kick-off party and I can raise my hand to say that this is my second year participating in North Texas Giving Day!
