Today is Texas Independence Day. It is on this day in 1836 that 59 representatives gathered in the Town of Washington (aka Washington On The Brazos) and “Voted into existence a sovereign nation: the Republic of Texas.” This declaration would be followed in the days to come with the loss of the Alamo on March 6 and the defeat of General Santa Anna at San Jacinto on April 21.
Over the next 180 years The Lone Star State would gain an international reputation thanks to people who had hearts filled with hope, hands ready for hard work and heads filled with determination. It would time and time again become the stuff that legends are made of.
Sure, Texans aren’t shy about their accomplishments. But they are also the first to step forward in time of need. Whether it’s rescuing a toddle from a well shaft, helping neighbors hit hard by a tornado or checking on an elderly neighbor, Texans continues to combine grit with compassion.
If you’re in Texas or wish you were, congratulate yourself for being in a great state of mind on this day.
