If you’re a little bleary eyed after watching the red carpet parade and the doling out of Oscars, it’s perfectly understandable. Luckily, this year provides an extra day for you to recover and it’s tomorrow — February 29th!
History claims that St. Brigid of Kildare negotiated with St. Patrick that on Leap Day, women could propose to men without any embarrassment. If the man did not accept, he had to pay a penalty.
A European custom provided that a man who turned a gal down on Leap Day had to buy her a dozen pairs of gloves so she could “hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.”
But this is the 21st century and proposals aren’t limited to nuptial bliss. So make the most of Leap Day by “proposing” a project with your favorite person. It could be volunteer work, buying tickets to a fundraiser or collecting donations for your favorite nonprofit.
BTW, North Texas-based Pizza Hut is celebrating leaplings, folks who are born on Leap Day. If you show them an ID proving you were born on February 29th, they’ll give you a free one-topping Personal Pan Pizza to take out.
Leap Year trivia: Anthony, Texas, is the Leap Year Capital of the World.
