According to Dallas Can Academies Development Council Chair Dick Evans,
“Midwest Building Maintenance, Inc. will present the Dallas Can Academies Golf Classic on Tuesday, September 29, 2015, at Cowboys Golf Club. The funds raised during the tournament benefit at-risk high school students at five Dallas Can Academies campuses. The annual golf classic fundraiser offers businesses and community members a chance to enjoy their golf game and contribute to this non-profit organization that is supporting students who often fell through the cracks at traditional high schools.
“The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. and concludes with an awards ceremony at the end of play. Foursomes are available for $1,500, individual hole and other sponsorships are available. There will be prizes for longest drive, closest to the pin, hole-in-one, a putting contest and more.
“The proceeds from the annual fundraiser support the at-risk students of the five Dallas Can Academy campuses while they earn their high school diplomas. The nonprofit organization believes providing the tools needed outside the classroom also advances their academic performance and is critical to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty and illiteracy. The charter schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting and are part of Texans Can Academies, which has eleven high schools across the state. Since 1987, more than 130,000 students have been served by Texans Can Academies.
“’This year we graduated over 1,600 students across the state and 622 right here in the Dallas area,’ said Evans. ‘We are celebrating 30 years of providing the highest quality education for all students.’
“Two Dallas Can campuses also have Wee Can, an early childhood center for children ages six weeks to 12 years. The centers care for some of the students’ children as well as the surrounding community. A third one will open this fall at the Grant East campus.
“’We don’t want anyone who is ready to finish their high school education and move on to higher education or the work force not be able to be in school due to life’s circumstances,’ continued Evans. ‘Our classes are half days so that kids who need to work half a day to support themselves or contribute to their families are able to work and go to school.’
