Tortoise, rabbit, camel, cobra, eagle, tree. Sound like a wildlife compound? Nope. Those are yoga positions. There are those who swear yoga provides exercise for the body as well as soothing the mind. It has become so popular in this day and age of stress and anxiety that yoga studios are popping up like 7-Elevens on every street corner.
One has launched a new program benefiting nonprofits in 2015. Bikram Yoga Dallas has created Positive Postures which will benefit “one local charity per quarter as a partner. They will be the recipients of 100 percent of the fee from the 6:30 pm. Positive Postures class on the second Tuesday of each month at the West Village studio. Individuals can sign up online or drop-in and the class fee is $25, includes mat and towel.”
In addition BYD owners Karen and David Buckner will provide the beneficiary with classes on yoga.
This year’s plan calls for the following schedule:
- 1st quarter (January 13, February 10 and March 10): Girls Inc.
- 2nd quarter (April 14, May 12 and June 9): Attitudes & Attire
- 3rd quarter (July 14, August 11 and September 8): Cancer Support Community
- 4th quarter (October 13, November 10 and December 8): Dallas Women’s Foundation
According to David, “We’ve donated to various charitable organizations over the years, but we felt like it was time to create an official program where we could really give back to our community. Positive Postures isn’t just an opportunity for us to give monetarily, it’s also a chance for us to introduce individuals who might not get to experience yoga into the practice that Karen and I are so passionate about.”
