A Passing: Robert “Bob” Strauss

Since the Alamo, Texans have been legendarily associated with politics. Tonight Texas has lost a true-blue legend, whose reach went way beyond the Red River  — 95-year-old Robert “Bob” Strauss.

Both Republicans (Ronald Reagan, George H.W.  Bush and George W. Bush) and Democrats sought his wisdom and understanding of the political industry, locally, nationally and internationally.

With a smile, a twinkle in the eye, a Texas-style down-to-earth manner and stunning brilliance, he achieved a commanding place in 20th century politics. He could magically blend charm with a draw-the-line-in-the-sand position.

According to Mo Udall, “He’s the only man in American politics who could go through a car wash with the top down and not get wet.”

Born in Lockhart, his life extended to the decision-making places of the world. His law school classmate was Gov. John Connally. He headed up the Democratic Party. Papa Bush had him serve as ambassador to the Soviet Union. That’s just the tip of the tip of the iceberg of his countless accomplishments.

In addition to his achievements in the political arena, he, like the rest of the Strauss family, placed a high value on non-profits, both locally and nationally.

If you would like to learn about this remarkable gentleman, check out “The Whole Damn Deal” by his great niece Kathryn McGarr.

He may have been the wizard behind the curtain, but his accomplishments are the stuff that history books are made of.

Our sincere thoughts are with the entire Strauss family and the world which he so impacted. We regret his passing, but are inspired by his life and understanding of it.

Beautifully stated. What an amazing family. What a remarkable man. When last I saw him, he was in his box at Del Marr Racetrack in California holding court and then later at a famed regular card game with friends like Jenny Craig and the owner of Alberto Culver. Wherever he was, whoever he was with, he always had a kind and friendly word for someone from “Home.” My thoughts and prayers are with my friends Rick, Diana and Jenifer as well as the rest of the Strauss family.
