Still more good news! The Southwestern Medical Foundation (SMF) is busting with developments. First of all, it just announced the election of 12 new trustees to its board of directors. They include John L. Adams, Alice Worsham Bass, Nita P. Clark, Joe DePinto, Satish Gupta, David C. Haley, the Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison, Harlan B. Korenvaes, Dr. Danette McNew, Howard M. Meyers, Matthew K. Rose and the Honorable Florence Shapiro.
Board Chair William T. Solomon said, “We welcome all the new trustees and the depth of experience and commitment they bring to the foundation. We thank them for devoting their time to helping the foundation create a legacy that enriches the entire community.”
And this board has its work cut out for the trustees. Why, in 2012 it reached $840M in assets, including $5.3M in scholarship funds. Thanks to the scholarship funds, “$245,000 was distributed last year to 197 students, who are pursuing their dreams of becoming doctors. The Foundation also helped create the Endowed Program for Scholars in Biomedical Research, which provides essential research funding for new assistant professors. These early-career researchers receive $600,000 over four years to ensure a successful launch of their careers at UT Southwestern Medical Center.”
SMF has come a long way since 1985, when its assets were less than $30M.
According to SMF President Kathleen Gibson, “Thanks to the dedication of our new trustees and their deep knowledge of the Dallas community, the Foundation will continue to be a strong philanthropic partner to the world-renowned UT Southwestern Medical Center. A solid and enduring Foundation will help endow the future of medicine for generations to come and improve the lives of those we serve in our community and throughout the world.”
