It’s tough being a mom. Whether it’s seeing your munchkin off to the first day of school or on that first date, there’s a bonding stretch that no one but a mother can understand . . . especially a daughter.
Such were the cases for Lauren Chapman and Callan Harrison Saturday night at the Slipper Club Gala at Brook Hollow Golf Club. Here Lauren was chairing the fundraiser for the Communities In Schools Dallas Region; Callan had orchestrated the silent auction along with Co-chair Claire Amberson and Jacque Kennedy was presiding over the Slipper Club. But their mums were still available on premises just in case.
But the call-for-mom-arms was never made.
The Slipper trio pulled the annual black-tie gala off without a stress wrinkle or frown. Why, they even had time for a quick pre-ball visit with the makeup gurus and blow-dry pros.
But that’s expected when you know what you’re doing. Lauren, Callan and Jacque had both fellow Slipper members and area experts working with them for the past year to take advantage of the Mardi Gras feel of the season. Florist Junior Villanueva added to the flourish with mega-ostrich feathers in vases topping the cushy circular banquettes and extras.
Jackie’s seated dinner set the mood for the evening with tables covered in gold tablecloths and highlighted by large vases filled with peacock feathers.
And the guests really got into the New Orleans festive feeling. It’s amazing how well the Mardi Gras staple of glittery beads goes beautifully with real gems and designer duds.
Gala Decoration Chair Shelby Krause, upon spying a gent wearing embroidered, velvet opera slippers, immediately announced she was going to get a pair, too. But her pair would be totally unique to her. On one slipper would be embroidered a shell and on the other a bee — Shell-bee.
But don’t go thinking that all of this partying was a la Gatsby frivolity. Heck no! The girls’ purpose was to raise funds for Communities In Schools Dallas Region, according to CISDR Director of Philanthropy Lisa Loy Laughlin.
To do this, there were gaming tables throughout the ballroom and side rooms. The patio was filled with all types of fun including a table with dozens of fancy masks for guests to wear for the photo stand. At the other end of the patio were tables filled to the brim with such treasures as Prada purses, a New Air dual-zone wine cooler filled with bottles of wine and a trio of Yeti coolers with Coors Light and Miller Lite. Callan and Claire had put together a nifty collection of biddables.
Still the fashion was incredible. After all when you’re young, have perfect complexions and not an inch of cellulite in sight, what else would you expect? Only thing missing were the backs of many gowns. But who was complaining?
So, as the hundreds of young guests raised the roof and funds in the ballroom and patio, the moms survived the evening on the sidelines thanks to their very capable and talented daughters.
