The Southwest Airlines pilots are notorious for making the friendly skies safer, fun and on time. But what you may not know that the Southwest Airlines Pilots’ Association also has hearts as big as the universe. Wednesday the pilots got together and presented their main man Herb Kelleher with $100,000 worth of highly personalized vans for Ronald McDonald in Herb’s name. Destined to be used for Ronald McDonald Houses in Dallas, Las Vegas and Central Florida, the vans were conveniently parked in front of SWA headquarters for the presentation.
As Herb puffed away on a never-ending cigarette and sidekick Colleen Barrett sat a few feet away, SWA President Steve Chase announced to the crowd the donation in Kelleher’s honor. It was due to the fact that the p9ilots had heard that the Dallas house was in need of new transportation and the pilots made it happen three times over.
Despite admitting that this gesture truly was monumental for him, Herb was not about to let it get all mushy. Instead he told the crowd that he had maintained his youthful looks by using Oil of Olay. Then he added that he was surprised to learn that it was generally used externally and not internally.
When asked by Herb if he wanted to make a comment about his youthful look, SWA President Gary Kelly was the perfect straight man responding, “Whatever!” with a big old “luv ya” grin.
