April has always had a special spot in America’s agendas. Yes, it’s tax filing month. Yes, it starts with April Fools Day. But it is also Volunteer Month. Yup, it’s the month in which volunteers are not just honored, they’re celebrated for giving countless hours and efforts for the good of others.
An example of such giving is Leo Keiles (pictured). In Ebby Halliday‘s world, Leo would be considered a kid. He’s just 97-years young. Sunday he and countless other volunteers were feted at Baylor University Medical Center’s Annual Awards Presentation and Reception. This year’s theme was a sock hop complete with jukebox, poodle skirts, and a killer menu.
But Leo’s 3,000 hours weren’t the record breaker of the group present. That honor went to Chris Christ (pictured in an Elvis hairpiece with VP of Patient Care Support Services Liz Youngblood) with a whopping 8,000 hours. The spirited Leo warned the group that he planned to keep on until he was at least 120.
Alas, the diminutive fella couldn’t stay for the cheese logs, sundaes and French fries. He had to catch his bus home.
Personal note: One of the things you notice about volunteers — they seem happier than most of us.

To whom it may concern: Corrections to the above about Baylor.
The “Elvis” shown is Chris Christ, and he had received his 8,000 bar.
