JUST IN: Actor, Businessman, Thorn Co-Founder Ashton Kutcher To Be New Friends New Life 14th Annual Luncheon Speaker

This spring’s lineup of luncheon speakers/special guests was sorta looking like a girls-only situation (Simone Biles for Jonathan’s Place, Bethenny Frankel for Community Partners of Dallas, Robin Roberts for Interfaith Family Services, Rachel Zoe for Mad Hatters Tea, Nancy Kerrigan for The Elisa Project and Arianna Huffington for Genesis).

But leave it to New Friends New Life’s 14th Annual Luncheon Co-Chairs Lisa Cooley and Tanya Foster to provide someone smart, influential, successful and of the male gender to serve as guest speaker — Ashton Kutcher.

Ashton Kutcher*

Whoa! Why Ashton? Yes, he’s hot. Yes, he’s a movie star. Yes, the last time he was seen in this neck of the woods was for the iced-over Super Bowl with then-wife Demi Moore. And, yes, he’s now happily married to Mila Kunis and the very cool father of two.

So, what does he have to do with New Friends New Life’s mission of restoring and empowering formerly trafficked and sexually exploited women, teens and children?” A heck of a lot and it ain’t no recent undertaking!

When he was married to Demi, the couple founded Thorn, an organization that develops innovative technology solutions to fight the sexual exploitation of children.

According to Ashton, “Technology has completely changed the landscape when it comes to the abuse and exploitation of children. We created Thorn as a way to turn the tables and leverage technology to be a part of the solution, instead of a part of the problem.”

While the marriage didn’t last, Thorn did. It has “helped law enforcement identify and recover over 6,000 domestic human tracking victims to date (with 474 of those victims being received in the state of Texas).”

And Dallas is a major point of interest for his work.

Tanya pointed out that “In Dallas alone, sex trafficking is a $99 million criminal enterprise. Enlightened by so many staggering statistics and stories from survivors, Lisa and I are committed to rallying the support needed to bring an end to this injustice. There is much work to be done. ”

The luncheon will take place on Wednesday, May 10, at the Omni Dallas Hotel with Gail and Gerald Turner serving as honorary co-chairs. Sponsorships are now available ranging from $2,500-$100,000. Individual tickets will be available in March, but don’t wait. Splurge and become a sponsor by calling Jennifer Yarbrough at 214.965.0935.

Despite all types of cajoling and downright begging, neither of the ladies is letting on who the speaker will be. Hmm, in the past the luncheon has had Nicolas Sparks, Barbara Pierce Bush, Sally Fields, Kevin Costner and Amal Clooney on stage. The mind boggles trying to figure out what name will be revealed in the weeks ahead.

Stay tuned. Oh, and don’t bother signing up for a ticket. They ain’t available right now, but sponsorships are. Feel free to ask about ’em.

BTW, it’s no longer called the Wings Luncheon. Guess too many peeps thought it was a fundraiser for retired flight attendants.

JUST IN: Tanya Foster To Chair 2015 John Wayne Film Festival

2014 John Wayne Film Festival Co-Chairs Anne and Steve Stodghill just got back from Ascot and joined their fellow chair David Hale Smith in announcing festival plans for 2015.

They’ll still be involved, but Tanya Foster will take over the role of chairing the John Wayne Cancer Foundation fundraiser.

This festival isn’t her first rodeo. A few years back she headed up the Dallas International Film Festival and Dallas Film Society.

Don’t think this is going to be an annual Dallas event. Nope. In 2016 the festival will move to another Texas city.

BTW, the Stodghills and David handed over $250,000 to the foundation for this first-time Dallas effort.

Just In: Dallas Film Society President/CEO Tanya Foster Is Resigning

Tanya Foster

It’s been learned that Dallas Film Society President/CEO Tanya Foster is resigning.

The official announcement will be made next week that the DFS is immediately undertaking a search for Tanya’s replacement. Hmm, qualifications — be brilliant, beautiful and beyond charming?

Before Tanya cleans out her desk, she’ll be part of that search team including Dallas Film Society Chairman of the Board Lynn McBee.

During her two-year tenure, Tanya supervised the DFS’s having Robert Duvall at Art of the Film in 2010, and served as executive director for a memorable Dallas International Film Festival hosting Dennis Quaid, Jerry Jeff Walker, Peter Fonda, Ann-Margret and other dazzling stars this past spring.

Oh, yes. Of course, you want to know why she’s resigning. How about one husband and four kiddos? If you’ve ever raised munchkins, you know that it’s imperative to be available at their beck and call once they hit the teenage years. Looks like Ms. Tanya has her priorities nicely in place.

MySweetCharity’s Tanya: The Stars And Snow Are Everywhere At Sundance

Tanya Foster

MySweetCharity headquarters has been under water thanks to the approaching Super Bowl tsunami. No excuse. . . especially when Dallas Film Society/MSC’s Tanya Foster has been filing stories plus photos about the Sundance Film Festival in arctic conditions. Here is a round up of Tanya’s doings among the movie makers for Monday and Tuesday:

Monday @ 11:40 a.m. “I hit the mother load on talent at the screening of “Another Happy Day.”  Ellen Barkin, Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth (pictured right with, from the left, Ellen Barkin and Demi Moore), Erza Miller, Ellen Burstyn, Thomas Haden Church, George Kennedy.  This brilliant film about a dysfunctional family forced to come together for a family wedding was written and directed by Sam Levinson, who is only 25 years old.

“Ellen, Demi and Kate all looked stunning during the Q & A in black.  All three look to be a size 0!

“No sight of Ashton Kutcher…

“At the screening of “Homework,” I got this great shot of Rita Wilson (pictured) during Q & A. No, Tom Hanks is not here.  She did a great job portraying the mom of Freddie Highmore‘s character George.

“I saw “Red State” last night.  Director and screenwriter Kevin Smith.  Need I say more?”

Monday at 3:27 p.m. — “Her name is Olivia Croccichia and she plays Dennis Leary’s daughter on Rescue Me.  She is at Sundance with a film called “Terri” with John C. Reilly.

“She was adorable and smart.  15 years old.  She is here for the week with her mom to support the film.”

Tuesday at 12:14 pm. –“Just sent you a picture of the weather here today.  Pouring down snow!!!!!!”
