Camp John Marc Patrons Celebrated The Camp’s 25th Anniversary At Kathy And Harlan Crow’s Library

Seriously, are there two cuter fellas on morning TV than WFAA’s Ron Corning and KDFW’s Chip Waggoner? While Ron is the go-to-guy for brilliant spontaneous quips and breaking news, Chip is the calm voice that directs folks through the insanity of the day’s traffic.

But on Monday, May 2, Chip was in blue blazer at Kathy and Harlan Crow’s library for the Camp John Marc 25th anniversary patron party.

How about some insider info on KDFW’s morning team? Chip’s pooch passed away a couple of years ago, but he didn’t replace the canine with another dog. The Waggoner household has a couple of Ragdoll cats, one of which fetches.

Regarding the KDFW dog situation, anchor Tim Ryan has added a Golden Retriever to the clan. According to Chip, the four-month-old pup is already following his marching orders. Ah, come one. If you lived with Tim, wouldn’t you heel to his commands?

And when it comes to newcomers to the household, anchor Lauren Pryzbyl is adding to hers. In addition to training pup Mattie and raising toddler Landry, she and husband Shane Miller are expecting their second munchkin.

But on this evening, the 100-plus guests like Chris Durovich, Marie Dean, Tanya and Scott Miller, Peggy Meyer, Jane and Chick Pierce, Suzzi Perry, Ellen and John McStay and Brill Garrett were taking the walking bridge across Turtle Creek to the Crows’ estate. Those in stilettos discovered that the boards of the bridge had just enough space between them to trap a heel.

But once there, it was a perfect evening to learn about the plans for the 25th anniversary celebration at Camp John Marc. It was also a poignant occasion. After 25 years of heading up the camp, Vance Gilmore is retiring.

CJM Executive Board Member Craig Innes—he’s been involved with the camp for more than 25 years—admitted that when the camp for kids facing chronic medical and physical conditions got started, they weren’t quite sure what would happen. But that first year 500 youngsters attended the camp during eight weeks. Now, “on average over 3,000 children, teens and family members attend a CJM camp every year.” The camps are tailor-made for youngsters suffering from kidney disease, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, blood disorders, cancer, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, juvenile arthritis, severe asthma and burns.

The fundraising activities and donations help defray the $585 per camper cost by reducing it to $195.

Round Robin February 28: Genesis Young Leaders’ Masquerade And 19th Annual Slipper Club Gala

Well, Mother Nature just couldn’t hold back any longer and she let the winter weather blow up a lot of plans for the weekend. But some groups rallied the troops, like the Dallas Festival of Ideas in the Performing Arts District and the Resource Center’s Toast to Life Voodoo on the Trinity at The Empire Room on Saturday, February 28. Here are a couple of field reports about other goings on:

beautifully transformed the space by using unique touches from Garden Gate Floral and Fauxcades to create an art deco feel of golds, blacks, and whites.

With a “Masquerade Mule” or other festive drinks from Deep Eddy Vodka in hand, partygoers —draped in masks, party beads, and cocktail chic—chatted and captured memories at the photo booth or Slo-Mo video station. The silent auction and raffle grabbed attendees’ attention by offering items like Arteriors lamps, a Yeti cooler filled with Four Corners Brewing Co. beer, and a staycation at Hotel ZaZa. After table games and bidding, guests kept warm on the dance floor with help from entertainment Cuvee.

Slipper Club, a not-for-profit organization and the first women’s social club of Dallas that fosters charitable giving programs to support charities serving women and children, hosted its 19th annual fundraising gala, a “Bubbly Affair” at Belo Mansion. An evening of cocktails, live music by Time Machine Band, Vegas-style casino games, an extensive silent auction, raffles, photo booth by DTX Media, champagne tower and gourmet chicken and waffles, brought together more than 500 members and supporters to benefit Slipper Club’s 2015 beneficiary, Camp John Marc (CJM).

Before the expected guests arrived on one of Dallas’ coldest nights in 2015, Slipper Club President, Susan Deasy Conway, hosted the annual President’s Dinner that included Belo Mansion Caesar Salad, fork-tender beef short rib with a Cabernet demi-glaze served with garlic mashed potatoes and winter root vegetables and flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce.

Highlighting Slipper Club’s 2015 achievements, Susan presented CJM Executive Director Vance Gilmore to enlighten guests on the impact the Slipper Club’s donation will have toward the campers and organization in months to come.

In addition to the extravagant evening, the silent auction was complete with more than 200 items in categories including great escapes, sporting events, entertainment and more. The total amount raised on Saturday night will be announced in late March with a check presentation to Vance. This year’s gala would not have been such an amazing success without Gala Chair Erika Burton, Auction Co-Chairs Haley Donald and Blair Nelson, the gala team, Slipper Club board members and Slipper Club’s wonderful sponsors.

Camp John Marc, a nonprofit organization founded in 1991, inspires confidence for life through high-quality camping programs for children, teens and families. Year-round programming and specialized camp facilities are uniquely designed in partnership with Dallas-Fort Worth pediatric hospitals, community volunteers and health organizations dedicated to serving campers living with chronic, medical and physical challenges. Almost 25 years later, CJM currently hosts eleven week-long summer camps and more than 25 weekend camps. On average, more than 3,000 children, teens and family members attend a CJM camp every year.

Michal Powell May Have Gotten The Very Best Gift Of The Season

Michal Powell’s Christmas gift came early. The 2015 Crystal Charity Ball chair thought she was just going to the Dallas Country Club for dinner on Tuesday, December 2, with husband Loyd. No big deal. But then she walked into a private dining room and discovered 22 very close friends and family including Baylor Health Care System CEO Joel Allison and Baylor Health Care System Foundation President Robin Robinson.

The occasion? More about that later. First a little history.

It seems that a couple of years ago, CCB received an application to provide funding for North Texas babies diagnosed with spina bifida to have surgery while in-utero. It was an amazing operation available in Houston but not North Texas, forcing mothers to relocate for surgery and post-op monitoring. This meant mothers were separated from their husbands and their families in most cases for weeks and possibly months.

However, Dr. Kevin Magee and his Fetal Care Center at Baylor were on the brink of providing a breathtaking procedure. It had the baby no-bigger-than-a-Barbie-Doll being literally taken out of the womb and a pediatric surgeon sealing the spine’s opening.

Unfortunately, because of so many requests, this one just didn’t make the CCB cut.

It was during her volunteer work at Camp John Marc that Michal witnessed how devastating the birth defect was and how the surgery could truly make a dramatic difference in the children’s lives and those of their families. No, none of Michal’s family had suffered from the disease, but that didn’t matter. She wanted to do more. Husband Loyd understood and deeply appreciated his wife’s personal and emotional involvement. But what could he do? He was an oilman, not a doctor. So, he reached out to Joel and Robin for a solution.

Back to the Dallas Country Club. The real reason for the get-together was to tell Michal that Loyd had made “two nice gifts” to make the surgeries possible at Baylor. There were no photographers to capture the tears, surprise and embraces. Cameras weren’t necessary because no one present would ever forget the reactions of all in the room.

It was truly the kind of gift that reflects the season. Loyd gave Michal the gift that allowed her to provide others with life-changing happiness. Better than “The Gift of the Magi.”

Round Robin Sept. 18: Too Many To List

Every now and then, there are “go-figure moments” in fundraising scheduling. Thursday, September 18, was such a day. Here it was the tsunami of nonprofits emailing, calling and tapping sources to donate to the North Texas Giving Day. Last year most groups went dark to allow the big day to take place uninterrupted. This year the pendulum swung in the opposite direction with receptions, parties and announcements taking place all over the place. The AT&T Chairman’s dinner was being held at the Winspear and Dallas Opera’s First Sight was filling Roberto Cavalli with beautiful people including First Sight/First Night Co-Chairs Nick Even and Lynn McBee.

“Art and fashion enthusiasts gathered at Forty Five Ten for a special event to kick off the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center’s upcoming fundraiser, Art for Advocacy. Special guest and fashion designer, Greg Lauren, showcased his newest collection while guests sipped on Austin Cocktails. DJ Lucy Wrubel kept the party going with beats that pulsed throughout the store. In support of the event, Forty Five Ten’s Brian Bolke offered 10% of the evening’s proceeds to benefit DCAC and will extend 10% of sales from the Greg Lauren collection to the agency through Nov. 1.

“Art for Advocacy celebrates the transformative power of art therapy in helping children process trauma and heal emotional scars as a result of abuse. Proceeds support DCAC’s work in improving the lives of abused children in Dallas County and providing national leadership on child abuse issues. Slipper Club Announcement

Over at Trinity Groves, the Slipper Club gals gathered for the announcement of the 2015 gala plans. According to Slipper Club President Susan Deasy and Gala Chair Erika Burton, the annual party will benefit Camp John Marc. It will take place at Belo Mansion on Friday, February 27.

Junior League Announcement

The Junior Leaguers and their fans assembled at the Galleria’s Belk to hear deets about the 53rd annual fundraising ball. Ball Chair Beverly Cahill revealed the theme will be “The Magnolia Ball.” Why, oh, why does one suspect that magnolias will be abundant that night?

Beverly explained the thinking behind the theme, “This year’s theme will embrace the elegant heritage of our great city of Dallas with a classic, yet stylish twist,” said Cahill. “The Magnolia Ball will be the Southern Chic dinner and dancing event of the season!”

Then she added another twist to the annual gala. Instead of an entertainer, she’s arranged to have two — jazz singer/songwriter Gabbie McGee to set the mood for the evening and Emerald City for post-dinner dancing and gyrating. Okay, so maybe one doesn’t necessarily gyrate in formal wear, but a whole lot shaking and dancing usually takes place when Emerald City is on stage.

The black-tie fundraiser will take place in the Chantilly Ballroom of the Hilton Anatole on Saturday, February 21.

Lynn McBee will serve as honorary chair. At the rate Lynn is going, she’ll probably end up chairing the AT&T Byron Nelson Championship.
