Under Blue Skies Equest Gala Patron Party Ponied Up For Guests At Ashley Tatum’s And Newt Walker’s Terrace Overlooking Exall Lake

Just blocks away from the AWARE Patron party, Ashley Tatum and Newt Walker took full advantage of the clear skies following the early morning storms on Wednesday, March 29.

Their fabulous terrace overlooking Exall Lake had loads of Equest supporters including two miniature equine ambassadors — Cisco and Dare — that accommodated one and all for photos and pats on the head.

Honorary Co-Chairman Allan McBee’s beard that he grew for being part of the Dallas Opera’s “Moby Dick” cast was still in full flourish. However, Honorary Co-Chair/Allan’s wife Lynn McBee was counting the days for the beard to be gone.

Aware Dallas President Venise Stewart Had A Very Busy Day On Wednesday, March 29

Venise Stuart had a very busy Wednesday, March 29. There had been her being featured in the Tradition Senior Living’s “Inspiring Lives” in the Dallas Morning News that morning. She claimed that she was amazed by the spotlight, but credited Linda Faulkner Johnston for easing her into it.

And that evening as president of Aware, she was attending the Aware Affair Patron Party at Aware Affair Co-Chairs Penny Reid’s and Thomas Nolan’s Highland Park home that night.

The Saturday, April 8th fundraiser at the Hilton Anatole’s Stemmons Ballroom would honor Pam and Dan Busbee, Myrna and Bob Schlegel and the Myrna D. Schlegel/Aware Scholarship Fund.

Unfortunately, on this evening Pam was away in California. No problem. The party came off without a hitch.

Philanthropist Sherwood Wagner Turned Her Preston Hollow East Mansion Into A Floral Delight For The Art In Bloom Patrons

Sherwood Wagner does nothing on a mini-scale level. So, the Art in Bloom patron guests had quite a flora experience at her Preston Hollow East home-sweet-home on Saturday, March 25. Just a hint were the floral petals creating a carpet of dazzling colors leading to Patron Party Co-Chair Sherwood’s chateau. But once inside and squeezed through the throng, the 100 guests discovered the banister to the second floor and overlooking the downstairs was covered in a blanket of flowers. Why, even the statues held bouquets of roses!

Surrounded in the dining room was Art in Bloom speaker René van Rems. If the word “flirtation” ever need a visual definition, René could fit the male version and Sherwood the female.

But Dutch-born René was more than just cute. He was set to demonstrate various works of floral art at the Dallas Museum of Art the following Monday, thanks to Art in Bloom Chair Sarah Jo Hardin and Honorary Chair Jill Goldberg.

EarthxGlobal Gala Patrons At Scott Ginsburg’s Mansion Included A Hairy Guest With Two Toes And Big, Brown Eyes

The evening of Saturday, March 25, could not have been more perfect for an outdoor gathering of earthlings. Perhaps it was due to insider arrangements by EarthxGlobal Gala Chair Emeritus Trammell S. Crow and Mother Nature.  

Didn’t matter who was responsible, Gala Honorary Chair Scott Ginsburg’s Highland Park estate was simply splendiferous, with a DJ on the elevated outdoor terrace overlooking the pool.

While there was no lack of gorgeous-looking people like Susan and Steve O’Brien, Mary Kathryn Bass, Karl Chiao, Caroline Branch, and Michael Cain to check out, the guest drawing the most attention was a two-toed sloth, much to the delight of guests. The handler reported that despite the length of the sloth’s claws, her hugging was no problem.

However, when one guest reached out to touch the sloth, it was obviously startled and clutched her date, who provided her with reassurance and a couple of sweet potato strips.

Over to the side, mom Amanda Ward told how her son, 14-year-old Andrew Ward, had been smitten with Earth Day. It seems that last year Andrew volunteered for the mega-event and got hooked. That introduction led the Lakehill student to think about tackling the problem of air pollution in China. Andrew decided to start off by aiming to reduce the air pollution emitted by Chinese factories. In discussing his plans with fellow Lakehill grad/Earth Day 2017 Event Director Matt Myers, Andrew discovered that Matt, who’d attended school at China’s “MIT” in Beijing, had also been aware of the pollution situation there and had thought about ways of solving the problem, too.

Arriving like a rock star, meantime, Trammell was ready to take on the world—literally—as he handed out small colorful “earth” marbles instead of calling cards. He was also very excited not only about the EarthxGlobal Gala, but about the upcoming Earth Day Texas event itself. Trammell said it would be including a number of prestigious universities, several national labs, 50 different NGOs (non-governmental organizations), and even a fracking conference. The organizers hope to best last year’s attendance of 130,000 by as many as 5,000—provided the weather holds up.

According to Laura Reeder, the EarthxGlobal Gala was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 22. But when they realized that both the Art Ball and Cotes du Coeur were scheduled that night, they simply moved the EarthxGlobal Gala to Fair Park’s Discovery Gardens on Friday, April 21. It will be just one part of the activities planned for Earth Day Texas from Friday, April 21 thru Sunday, April 23, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sadie Keller Stole The Limelight And Hearts At The Children’s Cancer Fund Patron Party

Despite being divorced, Pamela Moayedi and Mehrdad Moayedi are still on good terms. No, make that very good terms. Need proof? On Thursday, March 23, Mehrdad let his gorgeous blonde ex use his fabulous home on Strait Lane with the spectacular view of the property’s lake for the Children’s Cancer Fund patrons party. The reason is that Pamela is chairing the Friday, April 21st Children’s Cancer Fund “Broadway Light and Runway Lights” on Friday, April 21, at the Hilton Anatole.

Originally, organizers had scheduled the gala for Saturday, April 22 at the Women’s Center at Fair Park. Then they discovered that the Art Ball was taking place on that Saturday. So, they moved both the date and the location to Friday April 21, to the Texas Discovery Garden.

The No Tie Dinner And Dessert Party Patron Party on Saturday, March 18, proved to be a mini-version of the 12th annual AIDS Services of Dallas fundraiser on Saturday, April 8, at Frontiers of Flight Museum. There was plenty of food, libations and eye-catching guests. Even the carpeted walk up to hostess Tricia Sims‘ mansion was not your every-day welcome mat. Here’s a report from the field:

Such was the introduction and welcome to the patron event for the 2017 No Tie Dinner and Dessert Party, themed “An Artful Life,” at the opulent home of Honorary Co-Chair Tricia Sims. The No Tie Dinner and Dessert Party, presented by Purple Foundation, is the largest fundraiser for AIDS Services of Dallas, a non-profit that is celebrating 30 years of helping to improve lives of economically disadvantaged individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS.

Brilliantly witty and entertaining, No Tie Chair David Nelson, who has served in the chair position for the last seven years, greeted guests and showered appreciation to No Tie’s numerous supporters. Hedda Layne took center stage on the grand balcony outside, delivering an explosive performance as guest mingled by the pool and Greek goddess statues. The signature cocktail, The Warhol, made with Reyka Icelandic Vodka, club soda, and angostura bitters, proved to be the refreshing drink of choice for the warm evening. Ben E. Just down Beverly, Lana and Barry Andrews‘ auto courtyard was filled with Junior League of Dallas sponsors on Thursday, February 23. Lana was thrilled about the prospect of heading to see the Andrews’ year-old granddaughter. The plan called for Lana, Barry, daughter Natalie McGuire and her husband Mike McGuire and the grandkids to head out the next day for California.  

According to Lana, the timing couldn’t have been better. It was Academy Awards weekend and they had scheduled dining at Mastro’s Steakhouse, where the Oscar-types munch. Meantime, Barry was recalling how he’d acquired quite a few David Bates paintings—several were hanging on the walls—back before Bates’ stock had risen in the art world.

As JLD President Bonner Allen greeted the estimated 100 guests at the Andrews’ front door, she was asked her plans for life after the presidency. She replied that she wasn’t going to think about it until after the gala. She did admit that her husband had suggested that getting a job wouldn’t be all that bad.

In the present tense, JLD Ball Chair Isabell Novakov still had her sights set for the Saturday, March 4th gala to break past records. Still, until the final coins are counted, Hilltop Holdings Senior VP Isabell wasn’t making any official declarations.

As for the black-tie gala, there won’t be a silent or live auction, but there will still be a raffle and surprises for the “close to 800” who are expected to attend.

As guests left the party, the celebration continued with guests discovering bottles of champagne and huge JLD blue-and-white cookies in their cars. Sweet!   

DSOL Presentation Ball Patrons And Honorary Co-Chairs Harriett And Chuck Gibbs Were Honored With A Cocktail Reception

With less than ten days leading up to the 31st Annual Dallas Symphony Orchestra League Presentation Ball, Shirley and Bill McIntyre hosted a patron party on Thursday, February 9, with the main focus on the ball’s Honorary Co-Chairs Harriett and Chuck Gibbs and the ball’s main supporters. Here’s a report from the field:

Longtime Dallas community leaders Shirley and Bill McIntyre opened their home for a Patron Party on Thursday, February 9, to celebrate and recognize Honorary Chairs Harriett and Chuck Gibbs and patrons for the DSOL 31st Annual Presentation Ball, when 35 debutantes  will make their debut on Saturday, February 18, at the Meyerson Symphony Center. The white- and black-tie fundraiser has inspired three decades of Dallas Symphony tradition since the inaugural ball.

Ball Chair Jolie Humphrey introduced the Gibbs, who are longtime supporters of the DSO and the Dallas community. Harriett is a past president of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League and has served in many other capacities on the board through her many years of involvement. She served on the Board of Governors from 2009-2016. Chuck is a partner with the international law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer and Feld and has served on the Board of the Dallas Chapter of the American Heart Association, the Dallas Opera and the Dallas Chapter of the American Liver Foundation.

The Ball is expected to raise over $400,000 and Jolie thanked the patrons for the success of the year.

“Through your generous support, you become a part of a long and lasting tradition. We are honored that you share it with us,” she said.

Ball Founder/First Chair Tincy Miller said, “Can you believe this? Here we are again.”

She was happy that the tradition has continued and future supporters of the Symphony are nurtured through the event. This year’s ball will feature a second generation debutante when Maddie Hendrick is presented. Her mom Lucy Myers-Lambert made her debut at the inaugural Ball in 1987.

American Heart Association Dallas/Fort Worth Area’s Go Red For Women Patron Party Had A Bigger-Than-Planned Turnout

The valets had been warned to expect 50 to 70 for the Go Red for Women patron party at Lisa and Clay Cooley’s estate on Thursday, February 2. Instead it was more like 150. Itty-bitty Nancy Gopez showed up a half hour into the event, but if it hadn’t been for her buddy Mary Parker, she wouldn’t have been there or anywhere at all.

It was blonde beauty/heart survivor Mary’s advocating to friend and stranger alike about the warning signs of heart disease that had sent Nancy to the ER, when she was visiting her folks last fall. That resulted in not only Nancy’s recovery from a true life-threatening condition, but it also landed her on the American Heart Association Dallas/Fort Worth Area’s Go Red For Women’s slate as Open Your Heart chair with her buddy Mary, and receiving the Sandi Haddock Impact Award at the Go Red for Women Luncheon at the Omni Dallas on Friday, February 3.

Symphony Of Chefs Top Rollers Celebrated The Stellar Chefs Who Will Be Cooking Up A Storm Tableside For The KidLinks Fundraiser

The crowd that gathered on Tuesday, January 31, at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel had an agenda. They were there to not just celebrate the cast of chefs for the annual Symphony of Chefs fundraiser. They also had their sights set on selecting the chef who would be cooking up a storm for the Monday, February 27th KidLinks‘ fundraiser at Eddie Bernice Johnson Union Station. Here’s a report from the field:

When your chef talent includes a James Beard award winner, Bravo TV Top Chef Alumni, a guy who recently “Beat Bobby Flay” on the Food Network and three World Master Chefs, that calls for a celebration. On Tuesday, January 31, at the Renaissance Dallas Hotel’s new City View and City View Terrace, that’s exactly what the North Texas-based non-profit KidLinks did. Celebrating the upcoming Monday, February 27th Symphony of Chefs culinary dining experience at Union Station, sponsors and chefs were treated to a wine tasting by 4R Ranch Vineyards and Winery, cocktails featuring Hennessy V.S.O.P Privilège and fare provided by the culinary team of the Renaissance Dallas lead by Executive Chef Frank Quant and including participating Sous Chef Steven Torbron of Asador. 

But that wasn’t the only purpose for the party. Perhaps by circumstance or even with intention just in time for Super Bowl LI, guests were treated to a draft style pairing where they were able to select their seated dinner chef. The Symphony of Chefs features an array of notable culinary talent including a set of rising star chefs who will prepare hors d’oeuvres, 22 chefs who will cook a four-course cocktail and wine paired dinner table-side and another set of pastry chefs preparing a decadent dessert reception.

As Jane McGarry took to the microphone and began with introductions and sponsor thank you’s, it was apparent that the crowd was anxiously awaiting their opportunity to select their favorite chef. The first set of sponsors to select their chefs were, of course, Presenting Sponsors Mason and Allen Custard, Emily and Bruce Robson and Kaari and James Wicklund. With a charming story about their 20+ year connection to Richard Chamberlain, Kaari and James Wicklund made the first pick of the evening, which was then followed by their second selection, Nick and Sam’s Steakhouse Executive Chef Robert James Clifford. Soup’s On! Patron Party Was A Feast Of Friends Supporting The Stewpot Alliance’s 10th Anniversary Of Helping The Homeless

The evening of Thursday, January 26, seemed just perfect for strolling in Flippen Park. And a couple of the guests for the Soup’s On! Luncheon patron party did just that. Instead of valet parking, they parked down the way and walked to the mansion on the corner where Luncheon Chair Heather Sauber was greeting the non-stop flow of guests like Nelda Cain Pickens, David Griffin, Jan and Fred Hegi, Nancy Scripps, Stewpot Alliance Board President Julie Marshall and Honorary Co-Chairs Margie and Ray Francis.

This year there was a bit of change in the air for the annual Stewpot Alliance fundraiser on Tuesday, January 31. Yes, they would be returning to Union Station, and Chef Chief Brian Luscher had an all-star lineup of chefs preparing the soup. But Heather had tweaked the usual program explaining that by having a panel discussion with Mayor Mike Rawlings, Dallas Morning News’ Keven Ann Willey and Robert Wilonsky, Dallas Police Sgt. Jeff Tooker and The Concillo President/CEO Florencia Velasco Fortner, “We’re returning to our roots of addressing the Dallas homeless situation.”

She also admitted that the plan avoided having to pay a speaker’s fee by tapping the local vets of the homeless situation. Smart thinking. By staying lean, the check to the Alliance will be fatter.

When The Senior Source‘s Spirit of Generations Luncheon honorees Jan and Fred Hegi heard their old SMU pal Mike Boone couldn’t make the luncheon’s patrons party on Thursday, Nov. 10, they were disappointed at first. But when they learned that attorney Mike had committed to helping a group of attorneys to shut down crack houses in South Dallas at that time, Fred said to college pal, “You go and do God’s work.”

The occasion was the Crystal Charity Ball’s Underwriter Party and the POA was for the guests to have their cars taken at the street and the guests to stroll in the moonlight up to the mansion. This made sense since the driveway’s entry only allowed one car at a time to pass through. With about 200 guests including Debby and Robin Robinson, Barbara and Ralph Babb, Pam and Vin Perella, Linda and Les Secrest, Piper and Mike Wyatt, Tincy Miller, Heather and Todd Furniss, Tom Addis, Tiffany and Paul Divis, Sharon Friedberg and Fisher daughter Elizabeth Fischer   RSVPing, the street drop-off made more sense.

Only there were a couple of hitches in the plans. First there was a big grate between the street and the driveway, and the valets were worried that the ladies’ heels might fall victim to the large slits in the metal panels.

Then there was the stroll. The courtyard is beautiful, but it is also a gravel one and a couple or three gals had to wobble their way up to the steps with the help of their escorts.

As for the moonlight, it had taken the night off and so could not help the guests up the drive.

Ah, but once inside, it was a glorious gathering with CCB 2016 Chair Christie Carter and CCB Underwriting Chair Claire Emanuelson and husband Dwight Emanuelson along with the evening’s presenting sponsor David Blank and his wife Stacy greeting each guest.

On the entry hall’s huge round table were the favors provided by Norma Hunt — bottles of wine from her Sonoma vineyard. It made sense. The wine was 2013 Perfect Season Cabernet Sauvignon and this year’s CCB theme is “There is a Season….”

And while some folks looked a little bleary eyed from late-night watching of the election returns, one gal admitted that she was so tired of all the news coverage that she went to bed before the final numbers were in. So, how did she find out who had won the presidential election? “I asked Siri.”

On the other hand, evening presenter David Blank was bright-eyed in introducing Amit Berger, senior VP of Diamonds Direct that had just purchased David’s Diamond Doctor. Amit has been with Direct for more than 20 years and was previously in charge of the Birmingham store. Diamonds Direct VP of  Marketing and Branding Kelsey Halford once again reassured all that Diamonds Direct would not only continue but would perhaps expand on the store’s presence among the North Texas nonprofits.

It was a small, interconnected world indeed when about 50 guests gathered at Holly and Jim Trester’s stunning estate for a charity kickoff party on Tuesday, October 26. The fete with food everywhere was to ramp up interest in the 2016 Billiard Ball, an annual fundraiser for the Boys And Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas that was scheduled for Saturday, November 12, at the Hilton Anatole.

The ball, which was set to honor Helen and Clint Murchison, would be co-chaired by Laura and Dennis Moon, who were chatting amiably with guests at the Tresters’ place. Jim, who serves on the BGCD board, explained that, as a principal at the Ryan tax firm, he’d worked for two decades with Kimberly-Clark CEO Tom Falk. It was Tom, Jim went on, who’d asked him to sponsor a table at the 2016 Billiard Ball.

The ball has raised more than $2.4 million since its inception for the clubs, which boast 7,500 members at 31 sites in North Texas.

Not far away, Wendy and Boyd Messman were admiring Jim’s extensive collection of Dallas Mavericks and other sports memorabilia. Wendy, it turns out, works at U.S. Trust with Dennis. Holly, meantime, was greeting guests and chatting with Charles R. English, president and CEO of BGCD.

Nearby, Laura Brown was also introducing herself to attendees. Laura had just joined the Boys & Girls Clubs as vice president of advancement, focusing on major gifts and planned giving. “My passion is in youth development,” Laura was saying to a guest. This was her first day on the job—and, given all the excitement around the upcoming Billiard Ball, she couldn’t have picked a better day to start.

Drink glasses were raised, and there was much applause Tuesday, October 26, when about 65 guests gathered at Libby and Doug Hunt’s beautiful, classic home to recognize recipients of the Dallas Historical Society’s 2016 Awards for Excellence in Community Service. The awards, scheduled to be presented at a luncheon at the Fairmont Hotel on Thursday, November 17, are given annually to honor “generosity of spirit, civic leadership, and [the] ability to encourage community-wide participation” in the growth of Dallas.

Then it was Mary’s turn to take the living-room stage. She proceeded to give shout-outs to Pat Mattingly (Education), Shad Roe (Volunteer Community Leadership), Dr. Leonard Riggs (Business) and Hugh Aynesworth (History).

Music And Stories Touch Guests At Dallas CASA Patron Party

The main special event, Dallas CASA’s annual Champion of Children Award dinner, was still more than a week away. But 120 guests at the nonprofit’s patron party on Tuesday, October 18, at Dallas CASA were excited to be privy to a special “mini-event” of their own. Here’s a report from the field:

The Dallas CASA Champion of Children patron party was full of special guests and friends of Dallas CASA. But the real treat came from three people you might not know—Ann Marie Hudson Brink, Angela Fuller Heyde and Nan Zhang.

The three are all members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. In their free time, they’re also volunteer child advocates for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). Ann Marie told a story that moved some of the guests to tears:

“My viola is made of wood, and the best wood for making stringed instruments comes from an area in the Alps just north of Italy. The most prized trees grow right at the timberline on the north face of the mountains, where the air is thin and cold. There is very little sun and the soil is poor. Instrument makers will cut the tree when they are at their absolute weakest, when the sap has gone to the roots. They will even wait until the moon is the other side of the earth so that gravity has pulled as much sap away from the trunk as possible.  Isn’t it amazing that from the harshest conditions come the most treasured trees that are crafted into instruments that sing and last for generations to come?

“I have been an advocate for eight children during the past five years, and what has struck me about each of these children is their resiliency and strength. They have lived through the harshest conditions, surviving not only the unspeakable but sometimes even the unthinkable. And yet with each visit I get a smile and a hug. This is why I’ve continued as a CASA volunteer, because I have faith that the children I advocate for will grow into healthy and happy adults and that, like those trees high up in the Alps, their lives can be transformed.”

After the three musicians introduced themselves, they performed an extraordinary composition by Franz Schubert for the guests, who listened attentively.

It was as if North Texas’ southern relatives in Harris County had shared their steamy temperatures on Tuesday, October 18. While weather-guessers swore it was downright unnatural for October to host temps in the 80s edging toward the 90s, old time vets laughed the topic woes off. The real chill wouldn’t settle in until Halloween. Luckily Lana and Barry Andrews’ palatial digs in Highland Park were chilled to fend off the humidity and heat for Baylor Health System Care Foundation’s the Celebrating Women patron party.

Nancy Carter was a-glow about their multiple hotel projects. At one point she got a tad bit nostalgic about one of their early projects for the Marriott Suites on Stemmons and the hanging of Bill Marriott’s portrait.

Across the way, Randi Hassell rolled her way from the breakfast room to the mammoth kitchen. The cause for the wheels with a pouch for accessories was foot surgery. “Would crutches be more convenient?” someone asked. Randi’s response: “No way.” And off she rolled.

Right on cue, Baylor Health Care System Foundation’s Robin Robinson stood in front of the fireplace in the living room and thanked guests and sponsors like Comerica President Curt Farmer and Tom Thumb sweetheart Connie Yates. He then recognized Honorary Co-Chairs Diane and Joel Allison. As Diane stood in a corner of the room, Joel recalled how Lindalyn Adams had approached him years ago to have a luncheon fundraiser to support research and treatments for breast cancer. He went on to stress that all of the fundraising and awareness building was for the good of the patients.

TACA And Business Council For The Arts Celebrated The Art Loving Greats

Thursday, October 13, must have been designated somewhere as Art News Day. In one part of town, the TACA crowd shifted their GPS from Jennifer and John Eagle’s nest for the traditional TACA Silver Cup Announcement reception to Marguerite Hoffman’s home. There it was announced that the 2017 Silver Cup Award would be presented to Nancy Nasher and Walter Elcock on Tuesday, March 7, at the Hilton Anatole.

Over at the Mayfair in the Sky Club, the Business Council for the Art held a thank you for sponsors and recipients of the Obelisk Awards.

Ah, shoot! What a loss that the two events celebrating the art loving supporter couldn’t have been held just 24 hours apart.

There are a couple of changes in this year’s presentation. Instead of taking place at the Fairmont, the event will take place on Monday, November 7, at Belo Mansion and Pavilion and tickets are moving briskly. Also, glass artisan Jim Bowman had designed the award that was more of an obelisk than last year’s model that was a transparent purple, kidney-shaped bowl.

Signature Chef Patron Party Had Guests Around Tracy And Kent Rathbun’s Pool, Chickens In The Hen House And Bees In The Hive

Chef Kent Rathbun appears to be half of his old self. That’s because of all the weight he’s shed. Even his ear lobes seem svelte. But as he reported on Wednesday, October 5, he hadn’t lost his commitment to the March of Dimes’ Signature Chefs Dinner taking place at the Hilton Anatole on Thursday, November 3. Yes, the event had taken place in recent years at the Omni Dallas, but there was a convention of some sort that had blocked out the ballroom.

While wife Tracy Rathbun was off taking son Max Rathbun to a soccer game, the Rathbuns’ indoor-outdoor entertainment center was the setting for the Signature Chefs patron party. The majority of the roughly 100 guests like Co-Chairs Amanda Shufeldt, Kameron Westcott and Nancy Owen partied in the backyard with its pool, shaded terrace and chef-envy outdoor kitchen.

On the other hand, Kent took Parigi’s Chef Janice Provost for a tour of the property’s garden, the two massive, 2,500-gallon water tanks, the beehives and the hen house with a sign on the door reading, “Do Not Gather Eggs.” The reason for the sign was because only the Rathbuns’ daughter Garrett Rathbun was allowed to collect the hen-laying products.
